And since I won't want my non-existent kids turning ut to be jerks, I wouldn't send them to Peoria's Catholic schools.

@peoriapundit : exactly why I sent my kids to Catholic school, so they wouldn't turn out to be jerks, and it seems to have worked out quite well.

As like some others, I'd take a huge financial hit if I sold. If I was 30, that may be OK. That said, I still love my 1922 built house. Even if I could get a decent price, I don't know if I'd move. I do love the convenience of a little big city. Our old boys network, ER, I mean city council will never change unless they die or something. This is why I continue to support businesses outside of Peoria country as much as possible to avoid funding their pet projects instead of ones we really need.

@peoriapundit

Is this a recent phenomenon (Peoria Catholic schools turning kids into jerks) or do you think it has always been that way? I have to say while growing up most of my friends were Catholic. I didn't find any of them to be jerkish (of course that doesn't mean these jerks you speak of don't exist, just that I haven't met any.....yet) and I say that as an always been heathen.

I can appreciate all of the positive reasons people have listed for why they live in Peoria. But all of those things can be found in Pekin. A very walkable city where are many amenities are within walking distance. I see a lot of people walking all over and I was actually taken by that when I first moved here.

While it is true that Pekin has its low rent district, it does not have the East bluff, the south end, or the North Valley. Every city has its pluses and minuses and different things appeal to different people.

I lived in four different neighborhoods over 9 years in Peoria and never felt completely safe in any of them. The problem I do not have in Pekin.

@cjsummers your neighborhood is very similar to the one I lived in back home and is one place that I can appreciate the diversity that you speak of, but ike those on the east bluff, well you can find good things, you are on an island and are surrounded by some very terrible things.

I'm not trying to promote Pekin per se, but it is remarkably much better here for me. And it's not a 30 minute drive from Peoria

Peoria. What's not to like? I love Peoria. My sweet little town.

It's all about "what do you want?". Some people like BBQ, some don't. Some like Scotch, others hate it. Some like walking, a lot disdain walking.

I was born and raised in Peoria. I have travelled the world compliments of the Department of Defense. I've found many places more beautiful, cleaner, and with a more favorable climate. But home is home, and home is comfortable.

@AnneC I forgot: when we moved to Peoria in the late '90s, I absolutely loved not having to drive at least 20 minutes to get to a grocery store. It was such a foreign concept to me. To actually get to a grocery store to do full scale shopping within 10 minutes! HA!

@PeoriaIllinoisan I will say this, and I'm absolutely certain it doesn't refer to you: Parents typically never notice that their own kids are jerks. ;-)

I can't even finish a cigarette by the time I get to a Haddad's grocery or many of the ethnic restaurants around me.
