A healthcare worker friend posted this on FB last night.. She's on a COVID-19 unit at Rush in Chicago.
"Last night, HCWs were given notice that at the beginning of each shift we will be issued only one surgical mask on Covid Units and ICUs. A n95 mask will be issued only if procedures such as intubation that could aerosolize the virus will be performed. Physicians, ICU RNs, and Respiratory Therapists are only issued one n95 mask to be worn throughout the whole shift despite having to possibly intubate multiple patients during that shift. Only changed if visibly soiled they say as we fight against this deadly invisible infectious enemy.
I was ready to go to battle for my organization but we keep getting hit with PPE Conservation tactics that makes me wonder if risking my own life is worth it. Every HCW across the nation is going through this crisis right now. Some now having to use plastic garbage bags as gowns and brown paper bags as face shields. It's a every man or woman for themselves mentality but we are ALL going through this together, right? We should feel protected by our government and our hospitals that we have dedicated our lives to. The hospital is our second homes, but now we don't feel safe in it.
We have not even hit the Big Surge yet here even with our now 3 units (32 beds each) and 2 ICUs (28 beds) converted to dedicated Covid 19 patients practically full since Wednesday night. OR Rooms have now been converted to ICUs, ER expanded to accommodate over 200 patients and by this weekend, each Covid room will allow for double occupancy.
My organization could do all this and yet why do I on the frontline feel unprepared?
This is an assault against all HCWs across the nation. Our government is physically harming the very people who are to save lives.
If we stand a fighting chance, shut it all down. Stop all the movement that is still allowed.
