When there is a dysfunctional and abusive family situation there is about a 99 percent chance there are serious boundaries issues too. An ideal situation is that the entire family ends up in family therapy. Otherwise the odds of therapy working decrease. However, that can be a monumental challenge in itself. Failing that, hopefully some will stick with the therapy and the end result often is a detachment from the abusive family members until they are committed to a recovery and start to make progress.The healthy ones can not carry the sick ones. But the sick ones can bring down the healthy ones.

@Rixblix When a child's concerns about an abusive situation are dismissed and not listened to there is an ever increasing chance that the children will end up in some kind of abusive relationship when they are older because they don't know any other way of life . Part of that stems from the horrific drop in self esteem because no one is listening to them.
