it sounded to me like he refused treatment at the hospital. I'm sure there are two very different sides to this story, and as is typical the truth lies somewhere in the middle

BacT Meningitis is deadly even for people who get properly and promptly treated.

@stairat49

He was at home with family, they called it for him and it picked him up there. Odd that he would go alone or maybe they didn't let anyone else ride with? I wouldn't personally let a close family member go to the ER alone.

When my husband went to the ER last year, he rode in the ambulance alone and I drove myself to the ER and met them there. The police officer asked me if I needed a ride to the hospital, but I said no, I could drive. Of course we didn't think he was dying either.

That is the thing with Bacterial meningitis most people think they just have a really bad flu and then it gets super worse really fast. I remember back in college, we all had to watch a safety/health film about bacterial meningitis. The college wanted all students living in the dorms to be aware of it.

If he was tested for drugs and alcohol and was not at high level yet unresponsive shouldn't more tests be run to see why? It just doesn't make sense to go to jail for not leaving emergency room. Brain injuries can cause confusion or combativeness.

@stairat49 When someone wants to get high many things are tried. How many times has he been there for help. This man knew how to work the system.

The news this AM stated that he was "treated and released" but refused to leave. I would think the hospital has questions to answer.

The hospital should have kept him for observation. It should not be up to the police dept to be totally responsible for medical care. This whole thing is wrong.

@tntrecycling : From your post, I must assume you knew this man and why he was at the hospital. Or are you simply judging someone who was obviously very ill and apparently should have had more extensive testing to see what the actual illness was.
It may have been too late, even if the tests had been run. www.cdc.gov/meningit is/bacterial.html
