@AverageJoe:
See what I mean? Emtronics was just looking to beat his "blame Bush" drum...again.

I know he'll ignore it, but this chart shows that gas was BELOW $2/gallon when Dubbya left office:

>> The President (any President) has nothing to do with, and no real control over, the price of gasoline we pay.

@Emtronics:

This is true. But OTOH there is this meme going around FB touting all the great things Obama has done including about a 5K rise in the DOW. IMHO, Obama has about as much control over that as he (or anything other president) has over the price of a gallon of gas.

@Chef Kevin:

You can bet your *** if the markets were crashing, who would the Right blame????? The President and his policies set the tone for our economy and how we all do. Look at the Bush years. Tripled the deficit and yet no one on the Right was concerned about this massive debt. Then Obama takes office and inherits the mess and the debt and all of a sudden, the debt is horrible and will be passed onto our children's children. The Right went nuts on out of control spending. Please explain why Obama doesn't get credit for lowering the debt at a faster rate than any other President in History, saving our economy, giving healthcare to millions, and all the other stuff he has done, while the Right says Bush kept us safe. Why no credit to Obama???? This country is much much better off than it was when Dubbya went back to Texas.

@Emtronics:

The meme to which I was referring was crediting Obama for some things he has little to no control which causes me to laugh and throw the gas price "barb" in there. I'm not saying he hasn't done other good things, but giving him credit for things like the upswing in the DOW is about as silly as blaming him for gas price increases. I mean if one is going to give someone credit (or blame) for something, it should be directly linkable to the person (and should be are the key words there).

There are some places in the Princeton, New Jersey area that are selling gas at $2.97. That is down about 17 cents in 2 days.

@AnneC, was it not right after someone blamed Obama? Yet you don't comment on that.... just Em for a response.

@Mahkno:

Thank him when the price drops to the price per gallon when he took office.

@AverageJoe:
Is THAT what you call blaming Obama? No....I didn't read it that way. Emtronics, on the other hand, took the opportunity to bash Bush....with distorted facts. I'm not defending Bush...I just dislike the rewriting of history to fit someone's agenda.

@Emtronics:

You need to stop watching MSNBC, and understand that Jon Stewart is a COMEDIAN. Get some real news for a change. Let's start with this.

(1) "Bush tripled the deficit."

2001 $5.8 trillion
2009 $11.9 trillion

The last figure includes Obama's stimulus, but the most you could say is that the deficit DOUBLED during the Bush years. Of course, much of this was due to the Clinton recession as Bush took office (dot.com bubble burst) and entitlement spending. The "War on Terror" was expensive, but hardly any different from a stimulus package (production of bombs, missiles, aircraft, R&D, etc. kept or put tens of thousands to work).

(2) "No one on the Right" complained of Bush's "massive" deficits.

Not true. Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and Glenn Beck were all critical of Bush's big spending. But deficits reached a new level under Obama, and they've only recently contracted with spending restraint and economic growth.

(3) Obama lowered the debt at a faster rate than any president in history.

I'm laughing so hard, I may need a funeral.

(4) Obama saved our economy.

Like FDR how got us out of the Great Depression (in case you don't follow, FDR's nutty economic policies kept us from recovery. Starting in 1940, only the benefits of the Lend-Lease Act and the build-up of American military power during the Second World War got us out of economic doldrums).

(5) Obama gave health care to millions.

Correction: Obama attempted to provide Health INSURANCE to millions, but in the process, millions lost their insurance (remember, "if you like your insurance, you can keep it."). "Health insurance" and "health care" are not the same.

(6) Obama doesn't get credit for his "successes."

Not true. MSNBC, Randy Emert, Joe Biden and countless others praise Obama all day long. I suspect, though, that the whining about him not getting credit reveals that his supporters know the truth, but refuse to admit it. Domestic and Foreign policy alike are in shambles thanks to Obama's anti-American worldview.

On the campaign trail, five days before the 2008 election, Obama said we were five days away from fundamentally transforming America. Six years later, we now know he meant. Some say they miss George W. Bush...

...I miss Jimmy Carter. Emoticon

Btw,

A president's policies can effect gas prices. Ever remember Nixon's wage, price and rent controls from 1971? They played havoc with supply an demand, and within a year, led to an energy shortage (the Arab oil embargo of 1973-1974 only made things worse).

Anne, the OP of the two in question, both were nearly identical.

first:
Thank him when the price drops to the price per gallon when he took office.

second:
You mean like the almost $4 a gallon when Dubbya left office????

yah, that's pretty much *exactly* the same... just on the other side of the coin.

That's the end of my "debate" about it. You will see it as ONE person "blaming Obama" and the other is nothing. okay. no bias there!

Gas was $1.89/gallon on January 20, 2009 (the day GWB left, and BHO entered, the White House). THAT is what Chef was referring to in his comment. Emtronics got it WRONG when he said that it was "almost $4 a gallon when Dubbya left office". Since when does $1.89 = "almost $4"? He's entitled to his opinion, but not ficticious "facts".

@RambleOn:
Thank you for shopping in Chillicothe! I'm glad to hear it was an enjoyable experience for you. Next time you plan to come up our way, I hope we can have lunch together at one of Chilli's great restaurants. Emoticon

Where was gas at 1.89?? It was 2.77 when I moved to Peoria in 2006. It dipped briefly to 2.17 soon after that then rose again. I might be wrong but I damn sure don't remember gas at 1.00 anything since then.
