Heard on channel 31 that the Coroner had just arrived on the scene. Not a good sign.

Criminal or not, I hate to see anyone killed. Everyone is somebody's mother, father, sister, brother, son or daughter.

The suspect displayed and pointed a gun at the teller. After the robbery, the suspect ran westbound towards the neighboring residential area. Responding officers identified the suspect via footage captured on bank surveillance cameras.

Information developed at the scene led officers to the 2800 block of West Sheffield in an attempt to make contact with the suspect. Officers attempted to contact the suspect for over 2 hours utilizing a bullhorn, phone calls, as well as opening the front door and having a family member attempt to contact. At approximately 3:46 pm, the suspect emerged from the residence and advanced towards officers with a gun. The suspect was shot. Emergency medical personnel were on scene and provided medical treatment. The suspect was pronounced deceased at the scene. The suspect was identified as Eddie Russell, 25 years of age.

I wasn't there, so I'm not going to decide whether the shooting was justified or not...

However, I'm already hearing how he was "such a great kid" and "he was so kind"

First of all, The police were able to identify his just by looking at the bank cameras. (That tells me either he and the police are close friends, or he was a frequent police "customer"

Well would you look at that.... I did a quick search and found since 2009, this "great kid" had been arrested 28 times. Several retail thefts, 2 carrying a firearm, numerous criminal trespasses, a few obstructing police officer, a burglary and an assault.

I'm not saying that he deserved to get shot because he was a frequent arrest suspect, I'm pointing out that he clearly had some issue that was causing him to make bad choices. Whether it was a medical or mental issue, or just a lack of guidance, I don't know.

he was supposed to start a new job on Monday...and with the money he earned he wanted to go to college and become a youth counselor. I can hear the stories already. I HAVE heard those stories already, on more than several occasions.

From the PJS.

Family members and neighbors spent the evening grappling with what unfolded during the afternoon.

“I’m numb and in a state of unrest,” Russell, Sr., said, adding that his son ”... didn’t have access to a gun. If he had a gun, somebody gave it to him.”

I am not a big fan of the police being judge, jury and executioner.

Is it just me or have the police lost the skills required to capture and arrest suspects without killing them.

After robbing a bank teller by pointing a gun at her, probably point blank or within a couple of feet, he flees. Police recognize him from photos and previous contacts, as outlined above. After several hours of attempting to contact the suspect with a megaphone, telephone, and via a relative, the suspect emerges from the house, reportedly advancing on officers armed with a firearm.

@joepyeweed What would you have had them do given this turn of events? Go ahead, put yourself in the position of the on-scene commander. What are your orders, Commander Pyeweed? The suspect is advancing and could raise that gun and fire at you in about a quarter of a second.

@joepyeweed
I'm sure the officers didn't have any intentions to be judge, jury, and executioner, they just wanted to go home ALIVE!
The police apprehend plenty of people on a daily basis with out killing them... Please tell me the last time Peoria Police shot and killed a suspect, then tell me how many arrest are made EVERY DAY!!
Is it just me or has the public become "experts" on law enforcement , but can't or won't do the job their selves.

I always ask those same questions whenever anyone is killed by the police.

Does the Peoria police department train its employees in de-escalation tactics?

@joepyeweed
Wow, seriously???

They talked to the guy for over 2 hrs. ..... they did not go in the house, he came out.
Please tell me what more they could have done. Oh, I know just go home and come back tomorrow? Or maybe just let him start shooting officers until he ran out of bullets then ran over and give him a gentle hug to sooth him.

They really should have had some mylar balloons and a cotton candy machine. Then they could have lined up and hugged him.

Well a teacher in Martoon somehow stopped an active shooter without killing him?

Maybe she could give lessons to the police department.
