I've never had to chance to experience River 1000's buffet, but ever since it opened, the Grand Village Buffet on Camp seems to be fighting (competing) back with lower lunch ($5 last August, now $6.50) and lower dinner prices ($7.99 now last time I looked). I wonder if that business strategy is hurting River 1000.

I've never even tried sushi, still have to make that 1st step. Otherwise, I usually prefer Grand Village's American offerings, plus egg rolls.

Board of Health didn't shut them down for a 77...heck even Sugar got a 60 something and they are still open...I think it's lack of customers...with all the new eating places in East Peoria, it will be hard for some of them to last...I t hink Applebee's next door will be closing soon..today at noon ..they didnt have one car in their lot other then workers..

@craftywoman :

Out of curiosity what is the score that they will close a place down?

Maybe ChefKevin knows the answer. That DOESN'T imply that HE'S ever been shut down!

I don't think there is such a number. The Indian restaurant on Main used to fail and then fail the follow up but stayed open for years and years despite that. How about this inspection from Joe's Crab on the riverfront?? Yum, CocaCola with cockroach floater please!

Joe's Crab Shack, 110 SW Water St., Peoria, scored a 73 on Nov. 30.

Violations included: Utensils on cookline stored in sanitizing bucket; employee washed hands then turned water off with hands instead of paper towel; employee did not wash hands before putting gloves on; spray bottle not labeled on cook line; wet wiping cloths found throughout kitchen area stored on counters; interior of chest freezer was soiled; prep sink drain had severe leak; hand sink in seafood prep area blocked with metal pan; outdoor trash receptacle lid not closed;

five baby cockroaches found in soda gun and soda gun holster; (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

floors in walk-in beer cooler were in disrepair; floors along cookline and behind equipment were soiled with food debris; lobsters were being improperly thawed; boxes of food were stored on floor in walk-in cooler.

@QuispNQuake I don't know what score shuts your doors. I thought I saw a 58 in the paper once but don't recall if it said if the place got closed. Yet, if you had 100 points on your inspection and right before the inspector left your sewer backed up into the kitchen; you would most likely be shut down.

I also have a feeling it may be up to the inspector. A place with repeated and ongoing critical violations would probably get shut down (or one would hope) quicker than a place whose violations are minor, yet enough of them to rack up points. Seriously...I got written up once for peeling paint. 5 points because it could supposedly get in food. It was underneath the hand sink in the bar....... I'll take odds of winning the Powerball next week over a little chipped paint under a bar hand sink contaminating food being served. Yet enough crazy little things like this could really bring down your score. It may not shut you down, but you'd see the inspector on a repeat inspection in 5-7 days.

But what bugs me is the inconsistency between inspectors. This situation **** off one of my managers sooooo bad, she got IDPH involved and wanted heads on a silver platter.

Grand Village's American offerings

@DennisinPeoria :

Since River 1000 closed, I thought I'd try this place. Nope, never again.

ARE there any good Chinese buffets left anywhere? I can't say I've had any to recommend in years. It would be nice if somewhere had a smaller one like Thanh Linh's size so they could focus on keeping the containers filled and fresh instead of having 30 half empty containers of congealed food. Thanh Linh has a very good buffet at lunch but I wouldn't call it Chinese at all, def Thai.

I liked Hong Kong Buffet when it first opened, but wasn't as impressed when I went back a year later. Not sure how much 'Chinese' food it had compared to American food, though...definitely more American-centric than Mings was.

@DennisinPeoria :

Don't make your first sushi trip to a buffet. That's like having your first steak at Applebees or something.

Bring a well-sushi'd friend and go see Hadi at Sushi KO in the Metro Center. Tell him it's your first time and he will make sure you know what you like!
