To suggest Obama committed treason for bringing a soldier home is out of line. The man deserves his time in a US court of law and not hung out to dry because a squad of men didn't like him.

no:

Returning war criminals to an active military theater is indeed treason. The U.S. has military intelligence that says at least one of the 5 terrorists returned and promptly contacted the Taliban. I have friends and family members serving in Afghanistan. That their Commander in Chief put their lives in danger is beyond reprehensible.

@AnneC:

You mean Bush, right? He's the one that started the wars.

Look, you'll get your pound of flesh. Punishment for desertion is death by firing squad

@HipKat:
Wrong, wrong, and wrong again.
1. Read my reply to Mahkno.
2. I wasn't calling out Bergdahl. I was calling out the Commander in Chief for releasing murderers to fight again against U.S. soldiers (and our allies) in Afghanistan.
3. Punishment for desertion is NOT death by firing squad. It's a maximum of 5 years in prison. Bergdahl is also charged with "Misbehavior before the enemy", a crime which can carry a life sentence. The death sentence...by any means...is not applicable in this case.

@AnneC:

What would you call Bush? He started this mess by lies and a false war and created Gitmo.
I can't argue with a wingnut like yourself. I can reason with a conservitive. You are just plain nuts and calling our President criminal when you over look the Dubya side is nuts. Good day

I will say it again...Schock innocent until proven guilty...Bergdahl....guilty before he was even charged.

@leslie110:

Nope. I have said I will reserve judgement on Bergdahl until the military court makes its ruling.
The POTUS, on the other hand, has admitted to releasing murderous terrorists and war criminals back to an active military theater. I consider THAT action to be treasonous.

Exchanging prisoners of war has occurred in nearly every major conflict. This is hardly treason. With it comes the understanding that those traded would or could resume their roles as active combatants.

The trade... the bargain to be struck is a BIG part of why prisoners are taken at all. POWs are bargaining chips for diplomacy. Always has been. Get over it.

@AnneC:

Technically, the maximum U.S. penalty for desertion in wartime remains death, although it hasn't happened since 1945. No US serviceman has received more than 18 months imprisonment for desertion or missing movement during the Iraq war. You will either get nonjudicial punishment or court martial.
