Comparing oneself to Lincoln isn't necessarily a good thing taken into perspective. If Lincoln is viewed accurately and had been President at any other time he wouldn't be viewed and touted as the "great" President at all.

He usurped the Constitution as he saw fit, pure and simply for personal gain. He was clearly a "bully" from the very beginning. He may have been gay, not that it matters but if it were made public his career would have ended abruptly in that day and age.

Lincoln was NOT the great guy that the Media has created and maintains, even the movie Lincoln scratched at the surface of who he really was but stopped short of calling him a crook.

@cjsummers:
So, do you believe Obama is similarly comparing himself to Lincoln in the quote I posted above?

@AnneC:

As President, Obama has a far greater claim to the comparison than Schock does.

Civil wars are ugly affairs, at the close of the civil war, prisoners were exchanged. Neither Lincoln or Washington, to my knowledge, left questionable people rotting in foreign prisons.

Mind you... Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl is being charged with desertion, not treason. People run from and abandon posts in wars. Sometimes people run because of stress. Sometimes fear. Sometime cowardice. That's why he will get a military trial... to sort that out. Just because the rest of his squad didn't like the guy, doesn't mean they are right.

He might be exonerated.

To suggest Obama committed treason for bringing a soldier home is out of line. The man deserves his time in a US court of law and not hung out to dry because a squad of men didn't like him.

@Seal: There is some hint of this at the museum in Springfield in the area where the political cartoons are BUT you have to be looking for it.

@Mahkno:

Returning war criminals to an active military theater is indeed treason. The U.S. has military intelligence that says at least one of the 5 terrorists returned and promptly contacted the Taliban. I have friends and family members serving in Afghanistan. That their Commander in Chief put their lives in danger is beyond reprehensible.

Those who sign up for military service...including Bergdahl...are made aware of that possibility.

Aaron was and is a crook, and needs to be charged as such. Once tried and convicted throw his *** in prison and make him an example.

June 3, 2014:
"This is what happens at the end of wars," President Barack Obama said Tuesday when he was asked about swapping American Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Talrrorists.
"That was true for George Washington, that was true for Abraham Lincoln, that was true for FDR. That's been true of every combat situation, that at some point, you make sure that you try to get your folks back. And that's the right thing to do."
So...the POTUS can compare compare himself to Lincoln (AND Washington and FDR) when defending his treasonous acts, but a Congressman who doesn't pay his interior decorator can't?

@AnneC:

Wait, which act was treasonous?

Whether he is or not makes no difference in comparison to Shock. It's apples and oranges

@HipKat:
Wrong, wrong, and wrong again.
1. Read my reply to Mahkno.
2. I wasn't calling out Bergdahl. I was calling out the Commander in Chief for releasing murderers to fight again against U.S. soldiers (and our allies) in Afghanistan.
3. Punishment for desertion is NOT death by firing squad. It's a maximum of 5 years in prison. Bergdahl is also charged with "Misbehavior before the enemy", a crime which can carry a life sentence. The death sentence...by any means...is not applicable in this case.
