back to shunning:

What happened to love the sinner, not the sin? Seems to me, shunning someone who walks away from a religion should not be shunned from your life. I would think you'd try to bring him/her back into the fold. What about the Parable of the Lost Son?

Cult, Joe, Cult. One of the things they do is separate members from the people in their lives that are against the cult

well, instead of engaging in the conversation, you go whine that people aren't talking about religion (obviously not true) and act like a little child. You win, Tim. I give up trying to talk to you. Just don't claim nobody wants to talk to you about religion. If you do, you'd be lying.

I will shun this for the simple reason.Asking and telling are two different things question and calling names are two different things.

Parable of the lost son--Yes the father did forgive the son and welcomed him back only after the son repented and returned home. We feel the same with our brothers

The father allowed him to come home, didn't reject the son.

Can't give someone the opportunity to repent if you cut ties.

for the record, I wouldn't shun.

I remember calling my sister and asking her advise on a situation. A young woman I knew (back when I was young). She wanted to come to church with me. She was a known liar and I didn't want to tarnish my own reputation by being associated with a known liar.

She told me absolutely I should bring her. SHE is exactly the right person to bring with me. If I shunned her, she would not have that opportunity to *maybe* "see the light".

Ok Maybe I need to start over Not sure if I explained correctly so here goes

To be disfellowshipped you must first be baptized--we do not shun those that are not baptized. Once you are baptized YOU know the difference between right and wrong so if you choose to continually do wrong or leave God then YES we will shun you

We use church discipline outlined in the Bible. We do it in love so that the brother or sister comes back, but not to do this practice is not being biblical sound. Jesus spelled it out:

Matthew 18:15-18

15 If your brother or sister[a] sins,[b] go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. 16 But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.[c] 17 If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector.

Oh brother. So is this shunning limited to a certain day of the week, or only when the moon is waxing?
