Where is Winkler Meats? I used to get the the sauce when VF was in Peoria Heights. It was great!

@billybob I thought it was, but maybe not. I usually go to Taco John's on Saturday or Sunday, so I will check this weekend.

Regarding the Velvet Freeze meat sauce it is my understanding that for a long time everyone wanted the recipe but no one ever got it. However, there are a lot of loose ends to this story as it all unfolded and according to some former employees and a couple of others in the restaurant business. A long story short is that someone might have gotten their hands on the exact recipe.

We were there one time and things did no seem just right. Could not put our finger om what was wrong. About 4-6 months later it was closed Cant say I was totally surprised That was the end of an era.I am thinking they were around for close to 50 years.

When I used to work at the IVY Club, we would rush out after lunch and get the chili cheese polish sausage with onions and jalapenos.

@ChefKevin :

Why would anyone ruin a perfectly good dog of any kind by slathering CHILI on it? Chili with beans? Now, CONEY sauce is delicious. And travel to Emo's weekly to partake of their coney dogs.

Its called meat sauce. The same as Velvet Freeze. Winkler meats bought the rights.

Because hot dogs suck, they are hoofs and ears and they only thing that makes them edible is smothering them with cheese and chili. :-)

Unless they are quality natural casing dogs, then chili is a crime.

Yes. They aren't local though. I usually stock up on a cooler full whenever I am in the area. They also have really good breakfast sausages. (Their brats are just average...)
