Hey, it's officially February 1st, folks.

And happens to be my birthday month. Can't believe I'm almost to the end of another decade. But I'm going to stay young by rocking out with links to some of my favorite bands and singers, both classic and modern. I have to start with Metallica, whom I discovered back in 1992, especially this song: More to come soon!

@DennisinMH : My husband turns 65 this month. He is a year younger than me, so, until my birthday in May we are the same age. I've been on Medicare since last May, so, I'm excited for him to be on it with me.

@pictureme2 : I'm glad I still got 6-7 years yet before I even think about SS or Medicare.

2nd Day of Birthday rock month. AC/DC first hit the scene with "High Voltage", but after Bon Scott's death, Brian Johnson brought them back big with "Back in Black". This is my favorite song, which gained renewed interest on the soundtrack of "Iron Man 2".

3rd Day of Birthday rock month. Led Zeppelin, I think, started the heavy metal genre in late 60's, putting riffs on R&B and blues songs. I mostly knew about them for "Stairway to Heaven", but starting hearing their other great songs. "Heartbreaker" is a good one, usually paired with Living Loving Maid. Here is a 1979 performance with an extended bad *** guitar solo by Jimmy Page.

4th Day of Birthday rock month. Although not heavy metal, this group redefined the Live Concert show, with lots of effects, pyrotechnics, and (at the time) outlandish costumes and make-up. They became the "Hottest Band in the Land", KISS!
I liked their music as a teen, even bought the 1st KISS Alive Album. But eventually grew to like other bands like Van Halen, AC/DC, Tom Petty/Heartbreakers, Cheap Trick. Still surprising they are still touring, although it's the finale, and with only 2 original members. "Rock & Roll All Night" became their anthem, but this song rocks too. It's from 1976 during a Paul Lynde TV Halloween special featuring 2 very familiar witches.

@DennisinMH : My former babysitter for my sons, who are in their 40's, went to school with and was very good friends with a couple of guys who were in the Cheap Trick band. Her name was Sandy McGuire and her husband Bill McGuire and his family owned Phone A Feast here in Peoria.

5th Day of Birthday rock month. Another favorite band that is not heavy metal, but this group exploded in the 70's with just basic good rock and roll fun. One of their 1st big hits reminds me so much of standing in the PCHS West Campus Leeway after lunch next to the jukebox, and it would be played almost every day. Steve Tyler and the rest are still doing their thing in Vegas! Aerosmith's "Walk The Way" is great, but I like "Sweet Emotion" better, especially with Joe Perry's sizzling guitar solo. He smokes the amps during the live shows.

6th Day of Birthday rock month. Not much happened in the 80's a far as new Hard rock bands. Except this one. They came on the scene with an Appetite for Destruction. Guns N' Roses' debut album in 1987, reached number one on the Billboard 200 a year after its release, on the strength of the Top 10 singles "Welcome to the Jungle", "Paradise City", and "Sweet Child o' Mine", These are the better songs; many others are ballads but they did a great cover of Paul McCartney's Live and Let Die (from James Bond movie of same name). Good news is most of original band is back together touring...including the Friendly Confines July 26th.

7th Day of Birthday rock month. The 90's brought out a different kind of hard rock music, call thrash or garage bands. Not your typical melodies, but still rocking great. Some of my favorites that came on the scene: Soundgarden, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, Stone Temple Pilots, Foo Fighters, Collective Soul, Bush. But the biggest 90's favorite came out big with their 1st album "Ten", and haven't stopped yet, with another album due out in March. Some of their music is laid back, good ballads. But all tell a very good story. Pearl Jam really kicks it and this is my favorite tune from them. This is one band I'd love to see live.

8th Day of Birthday rock month. Almost forgot about this late 70's heavy rock band whose sizzling lead guitar player dominated their hits for years. He literally 'erupted' on their 1st album, and continued, with his brother playing the drums, but going back and forth with different lead singers. Van Halen started hitting the charts David Lee Roth, then Sammy Hagar (David again for 2 tracks on Best of Vol 1) Very hard for me to pick a favorite here. Running with the Devil, Panama, Me Wise Magic are among them, but one real kick A** song featured former Extreme front man Gary Cherone. He was lead singer for 1 album before VH parted ways with him. This is one that no one thinks about, but it still rocks!

9th Day of Birthday rock month. One of the 90's grunge bands to take the world by storm with their music style, and perhaps lyrics that spoke to that generation, was Nirvana. Hits like Smells like Teen spirit, Come as You Are, Heart-shaped Box, Bloom, and more, all appealed to me as well. It's just too bad that only 3 studio albums were released before lead singer Kurt Cobain's death in 1994. Their MTV Unplugged special, (and video released after his death) is one of the best albums ever, in my opinion. Still, 'Teen Spirit' does get your attention right away with those guitar riffs.

10th Day of Birthday rock month. Another rockin' group with great guitar riffs, good melodies came out big after the release of their 2nd album, "Shout at the Devil". in 1983. But controversy, recklessness, drugs, drinking, and accusations of being 'satanic' followed this band. But they still rocked on, until they broke up after 2008, reunited here and there, and in 2019 for a soundtrack...decided to tour again Motley Crue, like a lot of bands, have their share of ups and downs, but they put out a lot of good hard rock, in my opinion. Especially this song, which could easily apply to them:
