@ChefKevin The Heights and Peoria's restaurant tax are about identical so from the tax perspective there is not much of a difference.

@cjsummers He didn't like paying $2.79 for a glass of pop at the restaurants. Plus now he can drive trucks cause his diabetes is under control..

When I was working as an Optometric Tech ..we would get a lot of foreign patients and I liked to ask them what surprised them most about the United States..the ones from China would say.."How blue our skies are"..the ones from India would say.."How big our houses are"..the ones from England would say.."How much soda we drink"

@cjsummers Most restaurants don't allow you to bring in your own drinks. The will power of some people yet others cant get a control over it.

If they're going to tax sugar I hope they start taxing it in EVERYTHING they put it in. Maybe the stupid food companies will start paying attention to what they put into our food.

I went gluten-free three years ago this month and had to learn to start reading labels. I was so shocked and saddened by how many things have added sugar--everything from the obvious, like cookies, to frozen foods, which I was not expecting. Read the labels on frozen broccoli and peas and potatoes and many of those have added sugar. It pisses me off! It's no wonder we are all addicted to sugar and developing these awful diseases at younger ages.

@froggy :

Really? It's been like that for a long time.

This new law would **** me off since I buy Propel, orange juice & Silk and all of them would have the big bonus tax. I doubt any of that bonus tax money would go to the intended use.

My Aunt was from Germany..so I got to meet a lot of her family growing up..They too, thought our grocery stores were great. At that time (60's) , most families shopped at markets over there and had to shop almost daily as they didn't own refrigerators.

When do higher taxes and spending stop?

@Byron :

Never.

In 300 BC, The ancient greeks wrote plays about high taxes and irresponsible spending of collected tax revenues.

When 'junk' food is cheaper than 'healthy' food.... there is a problem.

People knock those on food stamps for the 'bad' decisions they make in spending their limited 'free' food dollars but... there it is. Dollar for dollar you get 'more' by getting those higher sugar content food items.

When you take your kids out to eat and milk costs waaaay more than soda.... When ice tea costs more than beer or soda....

Not sure I like the idea of targeted taxing of soda but.. there are worse approaches.

In proposed state budget is a one-cent per oz. sugar tax. I'm sure it is all about funding for the kids.
