You don't think children should be taught to respect the country and the people who died for it by standing for the pledge or the anthem? I find that disheartening. Children should be taught that freedom is much more than just doing what you want to do.

@cjsummers :

Can I not respect the country and the people who died for it by sitting quietly? Would you not agree that having the choice to sit or stand is part of what those people died for? If you can agree, then why is it so upsetting?

I guess you could claim that by not standing I am disrupting the class, or that by refusing to stand I am being disrespectful and should feel guilty about it. But that sounds an awful lot like a dictatorship to me.

I guess this is where I differ from most....

You do what/how you want do and I'll do the same.
Don't interfere with me and I'll do the same

If I ask you why you do what you do, don't assume it's because I'm offended. It's because I'm curious and would like to give you the chance to educate me on the way you feel you do. Whether I agree with you or not, that's for me to decided.

@Byron

I saw it and thought it was interesting. I disagree with people burning flags but they have the legal right to do so. I also think that there is more to being a patriot than waving a flag or standing for the National Anthem, which I do.

@joepyeweed
I'd rather see people burn the confederate flag or a Nazi flag.

In retrospect, several months ago when the Confederate flag or anything associated with it was under fire, why weren't the Dixie Chicks forced to re-name themselves Chicks of the South?

Dixie Chicks

@ChefKevin :

The term Dixie did not originate with the confederacy... so why would they?

I would submit that those who died did it so people could choose the latter, while understanding the risk that some people might choose the former.

@cjsummers :

Pure speculation (White Knight Syndrome?) but I'm sure some feel that way.

Hey did y'all know that HIllary Clinton co-sponsored a bill to criminalize flag burning back 2005??

Please note the amazing ignorance in the article regarding actual flag burning.

You are correct. My son has a Political Science degree from the U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, MD and served in the Navy. His statements match yours.@cjsummers

I guess that settles it. One person from the Navy has spoken on behalf of everyone who has ever served in the military. /s

I agree with it as well, so toss in a former army officer. I'll stand with my squid brother.

@JnJ :

And that's where we see things differently. I don't see it any different than bowing your head during prayer, some people choose not to bow or close their eyes. It doesn't mean they aren't listening or don't care. It's a completely trivial action (or non-action), that some people apparently get extremely upset about. I think it's ridiculous that this is even a discussion.
