Solar is great they say......

You have to wonder......The toxins released by the panels alone in both of these fires, do they really offset the toxins released by the "conventional" method that was used to produce the electricity they supposedly replaced?

Ironically this building houses ammonia. Today's fire the ammonia was isolated and not impacted. I don't know about the 2024 fire, but maybe we should have restrictions on where panels are placed?

I would tend to believe that solar panel fires are very rare, but anti-solar activists and propaganda would have you believe it happens all the time. Same with those against Wind farms, saying the turbines fall, catch fire.... somehow cause cancer.
My opinion and mine alone and no one else.

What was the source of fuel?

@DennisinPeoria :
I know of 4 the Peoria fire dept has responded to. 2 of them on houses and twice at the IAW farm on Galena rd.

I wouldn't say they are common, but having them on tops of buildings/houses makes for difficult to detect a fire and sometimes for the fire department to gain access and extinguish.

@kraziebill :
Possible the IAW solar farm on Galena road was from grass catching fire somehow, not due to an electrical short in the wires that go from the panels to the battery storage area?
(Disclosure, I shot a story there when it first opened)

Ummm, the panels #msg1949494

@kraziebill : Panels would be glass and metal. Perhaps the wires and possibly plastic mounting material, or asphalt roof?

MadScientist : Ummm, the panels #msg1949494

@kraziebill : I'm hesitant to blindly trust Copilot, but a search indicates faulty wiring as the most likely cause. Were the panels the fuel source to fire or the asphalt roofing membrane? A suggested comparison is the rate of standard household electrical fires vs those with solar. I agree it is another potential point of failure and all the more reason to use an established electrical contractor for this type of work.

I wonder who is going to recycle these. More and more calls to have these recycled.
