There's a meeting tonight regarding the establishment of bus service to the Amtrak station in Normal. Details here:

www.peoriagov.org/pu blic-meeting-amtrak- bus-shuttle/

If you enjoy a good comedy/farce, you won't want to miss this meeting. Undoubtedly the City will regale us with expectations of high ridership. Then when the plan fails, they won't say, "it was a bad plan; no one wants to ride a bus to Normal and add all that unnecessary time to their trip! After all, there's free parking at the Normal station." Instead, they'll say, "Gee whiz, it looks like Peorians aren't very interested in passenger train service."

@cjsummers:

Peoria Charter Coach already offers multiple daily roundtrips between Peoria and Uptown Station in Normal. Not sure there's room for another player in this market.

The city can't come up with new ideas they only steal from others and can't figure out why it FAILS.

@EyeintheSky:

The steal successful ideas from other places but tweak it enough to call it their own idea and sabotage it and themselves in the process.

On the other hand, many places have copied successful ideas and pretty much kept the original idea in tact and met with great success.

Peoria Charter is one of the best and oldest cos. in Peoria. They have a sterling reputation throughout the travel industry. Their Peoria to Chicago bus schedules all have stops right at Uptown Station in Bloomington/Normal and all the times offer connections to north and southbound trains from there. Some bus schedules have less wait than others but it can very easily be done.

Also the Peoria Charter Peoria-Champaign schedule stops at Amtrak station in Champaign and there are Amtrak connections there to a number of north and southbound trains from there which cover different routes than the trains from Galesburg or Bloomington

QUICK!! Someone hire an over priced consulting firm that will say that rail from Peoria to Chicago would be a huge money maker and the city will jump alllllll over it, hike some taxes, add some fees, and all will be good.......

@Chef Kevin:

It is already there and has been for several years via Peoria Charter and Amtrak north or south.

I can remember when the Santa Fe and later Amtrak had trains that stopped in Chilicothe. There was even a period of time when Peoria had two trains a day to Chicago. People would make day trips to Chicago for shopping and Peoria still had a thriving and diverse retail scene downtown. Slowly, it all disappeared.

maybe the train can run by the museum. then we can have over estimated, under performing, over priced, tax payed funding pet projects together.

I don't understand the appeal of trains. It is certainly not the fastest way to travel.

I love trains. I remember when I was in junior high, riding the Rocket to Chicago with my family for a day of shopping and sightseeing. My dad had lived there years ago and always loved the city, and he'd find us fun things to do - riding around on the El to get from place to place. If we had such train service now, from Peoria, I would use it.

My son lives and works in Chicago, and he rides the train to work. He has his iPad and can read, play games, work, or even nap on the way. If I had a long commute I would much rather do that than drive.

More busses to Bloomington. How many more do you need? Doesn't Peoria Charter coach cover this issue? If they are going to have another bus ride to Bloomington it should take off from the museum. Lets throw our money away in the same place- not spread it around. Maybe the hotel might be another spot to loose money with the bus, or the civic center.

As it is Peoria is the largest city without direct train service to Chicago. Does anyone know what the condition is of the tracks between Chicago and Peoria? Or would major work have to be done on the tracks?

If so, Peoria would still be behind Bloomington as Amtrak is doing major upgrades between Joliet and St. Louis in preparation for the high speed rail which will cut down on travel time.

The high speed hourly service in the NE corridor is the reason Amtrak has tremendously increased passenger numbers since 9-11 much to the dismay of the airlines.

>> More busses to Bloomington. How many more do you need?

@bits1349:
I'm an advocate for direct passenger rail service from Peoria to Chicago, not mediated rail service via a bus ride to Normal. Yes, there are already six round-trip daily buses to Normal--four of them are run by Peoria Charter Coach, and two of them are run by Burlington Trailways, which is the official "Thruway" bus connection for Amtrak. I asked what was going to be different about the "new" bus service they are supposedly going to be offering, and I got no good answer at the meeting. Everything benefit they listed were things already offered, such as unified ticketing (available via existing thruway bus service on Burlington Trailways), two round trips daily (available via Burlington Trailways already). The times may change, but there was no certainty about that. I fail to see what we'll be gaining.

There's no city money being paid here, however. So local taxpayers aren't out anything.

@cjsummers:

Burlington Trailways now operates twice a day between Peoria and Indianapolis with stops including Normal Uptown Station. So why can't the powers that be do what they want to do using the current bus schedule?
