It's a hard reality, but all things and people must come to an end. Willie led the life he wanted to lead. He's probably more famous than most of our public figures and pro athletes from this area. Unfortunately, aside from the articles and commentary, Willie will likely go out alone without a funeral and appropriate burial. Illinois only pays a little over 1,000 dollars toward burial or creamation costs for indigent people.
I've had several encounters with Willie. When winter was really bad, I would give him some hot food and hand warmers. We would talk for a while and he would tell me he hated me because I wouldn't give him money for booze, but loved me for what I brought him. Shared some laughs and have some good memories.
