Uber
Has anyone used it? Any tips? How do you get started?

All the time out of town. Download the app and you are good to go. It is very easy to use.

I haven't used a taxi in a long time, so I can't comment on the drivers. BUT the vehicles all look like crap. Regardless of company, they either sound like their running on 1 cylinder or look like just survive a monster truck rally.

Yeah...taxis are gross and smell. Uber drivers use their own cars and get rated so they always look nice.

Uber is amazingly great. I haven't used it in Peoria, but in Chicago it is way, way better than cabs.

I used it three times last summer in New Mexico. I used it with two male colleagues. We had good luck twice, but the third driver couldn't figure out where we were located. We cancelled and had to pay a fee of maybe $5.00 to Uber and then found a taxi back to the hotel. It was easy to use and I felt very comfortable with my colleagues, but would not use it by myself because I am chicken.

My first Uber was from the airport in Atlanta to the hotel. About half way I thought "this guy could kill me" but I would think that in a taxi, too.

Several people who judged the wine competition with me in Springfield used them for the few days we were down there....didn't seem to have any issues.

I just used it for the first time in Peoria last night -- $9 from Downtown to War Memorial and Knoxville. Pleasant experience and you can see on your phone where the car is while you're waiting.

I know a couple people who have taken up Uber driving. Based upon what they described as the vetting process, I would feel safe... though I haven't actually used it myself yet.

They had to pass an internet background check and their vehicles had to be inspected. The vehicles have to be like new, clean and in good repair.

I use Uber and Lyft all the time. I assume Lyft isn't in Peoria but I might be wrong.

I like Lyft slightly better because you can tip with the app, unlike Uber.

Uber drivers never seem to carry cash so they can't break cash for tips.

I get mixed reports on Uber tipping. Some drivers don't accept tips saying it's company policy. Other drivers have signs in their car asking for tips.

Final suggestion - don't use shared Uber (aka Uber pool) if it's an option. It can take waaaay too long and isn't worth the savings.

You also can get $25 off your first ride. Every Uber user has their own referral code you can use for the deal.
