Does anyone know the average starting salary of a caterpillar engineer?

Background: computer science, new graduate.

Computer science... 65 would be on the median of getting your foot in the door in IT (GIS, Global Information Services), unless you have other experience and/or a damn good resume/interview.

Having said that, good luck getting your foot in the door with no experience. Most of the direct CAT positions are internal only. You will likely need to gain some experience with one of the contract companies (Volt, ATS) to establish your presence and knowledge.

Unless you have some really good connections, or some sort of specialized skill niche, you will probably have to start as a contract worker - and probably a realistic starting wage would be in the $40's . . . . if you're good, and dedicated, you would probably progress quickly, . . . just saying.

Unfortunately, your last statement is not necessarily true...

So CAT is not being anywhere near competitive for engineers because recent graduates with an engineering degree can get much more at other places like Texas Instruments?

Quite a few long-time CAT engineers (all levels) were " surplused" in late 2014.

Agency employees are contracted for potential hire as direct employees.
Contract employees are typically not on a hire track.

Cyient is a job position agency employer for Caterpillar. They tend to offer better insurance and vacation than some of the others.

Entry level engineers have a better shot as a direct hire than experienced engineers.

And every business unit has a different situation... many are in hiring freeze right now.

So to say how many years of schooling to get this job also how much did you pay for schooling to get the job.

that's a good question, tnt.

But, starting salary usually isn't your retiring salary. If you don't get an education, that starting salary and ending salary are likely to be much, much closer than if you get an education.

@tntrecycling:

I havent followed CAT engineering employment in decades. This has been quite an eye opener to put it mildly. I would say quite emphatically they are not anywhere near competing for engineering graduates, especially US citizens, as the graduates can get multiple offers working directly, not an agency, for cos. and starting at much higher levels too. It happens all the time. Some of the cos. are Boeing, Dupont, Texas Instruments. They recruit all the time on college campuses and come begging for engineering graduates that are US citizens so they dont have to deal with the visa issues that foreign born students have in order to work here.

This is disgraceful.

In the 70`s there were many that worked around E.P there were educated and workers some knowledge they worked at Cat and you know many died working for Cat. Times change so fast think the care for production has made us this way.
