The 12-year-old victim of Monday night's shooting in Peoria has died. County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll says his name was Demarcus Payne. He passed away from a gunshot wound to the head at 2:35 Tuesday afternoon. Police say his mother had called police saying her child was missing. They matched her description of him to the victim's description and determined his identity.
The shooting took place just before 5:00 Monday near Broadway and McClure. No one's been arrested yet. Police have set up an information center at McClure and Isabell. They are also accepting calls at 303-7048 or to Crimestoppers at 637-9000.
Those in the neighborhood near the crime scene say they are surprised something like this would happen there, that nothing like that has ever happened there before.

It won't stop in Peoria, there aren't enough Police to cover the town and they keep being the recipient of more budget cuts.

Peoria for the most part has a thug ghetto mentality. Drive down to the corner of Griswold and Grinnell about 8 at night. The parking lot is full of corner pharmacists and prostitutes standing around and now they have a sitting area across the street that was built and paid for with tax dollars, isn't that great.

Want to see a drug house that is cooking daily and serving nightly? Drive by 1700 S Ligonier, the windows are all broken out so the covered them with plywood and still dwell inside cooking during the day to sell that night. The police are there for fights a couple times a week, at least one of the two goes to jail overnight, usually the female but shes right back the next day. This is your city at work.

would seem there are some issues in the area. From the sounds of what they are looking for this kid could have been caught in the crossfire of something going on. We always say about our street it's not the neighbors but the crap rolling through. I for one would be out HUNTING the people down if it was one of my kids. So like duhhh said somebody knows something and needs to step up.

I agree the kid was probably caught in the crossfire especially if the vehicles were moving which apparently they were.Still it is tragic and gut wrenching news.

Unfortunately things like that have also happened in urban and suburban areas. They all get solved pretty quickly. This is because there was a huge massive police presence 24/7 in the affected areas for a few days and people eventually started talking.

Peoria, I understand has some unfilled positions in the Police Dept. So that might be a factor how many officers they can send into that neighborhood and still be able to handle other calls around the city. The city needs to fill the vacant positions ASAP and probably even create new positions.Still it would take awhile before they are hired, trained and out on the street. But that would help send a strong message that civic leadership is taking the crime situation very, very seriously and is willing to work toward a solution.

I have heard about the sitting area too. I dont know why but I took it to mean a bus shelter but apparently it is not. How did it happen that tax money was used for this? I guess there is another story there. How much did it cost?

There are also ways the city can change the flow of traffic in some high crime areas that result in a decrease of crime. One way streets is one thing and no turns on some streets etc. It has proven very successful in other places.

As I understand it crime has spread almost the entire length ot McClure. I dont think that was always the case but it does show how the crime area, if not controlled does expand. At this rate it is only a matter of time before it expands some more and continues northward.

billybob: Ramble on was instrumental on getting a public sidewalk closed it took several more years for most of the flow to stop. There are still some issues but no where near as many as before. I like the concept they are wanting to do down in the southend however the tenants are whining about feeling like being in prison. I see NO difference between the fences or the gangbangers other than the fence won't shoot or rob you. Maybe if the tenants were more inclined to call police and get the trouble removed it would not have had to go to such extreme so again you reap what you sow.

All it did was move the people who were a nightmare on the public walkway to another area where they're still a nightmare

This thread is about a child who died a violent death. May the family find semblance of peace and comfort knowing that the city is saddened by their loss and commits itself to finding the guilty and bringing them to justice. Whether it is a theater, Sandyhook or Peoria, it is just plain sad that a child lost his life!

PCAV will be meeting at the Gateway building at 6 P.M. Tomorrow to show support for the family and to show this will not be accepted in this city. All are welcome. It doesn't matter what your beliefs are a 12 year old shouldn't be shot.
