Officially started training for my next 10k yesterday!

I'm behind where I thought I would be, since my HR was entirely too high at a 5k I did in June. I struggled bigly! I have been working on training my HR and did another 5k after that and slowed my pace a lot. During my training, I have been working on hills too, since I am terrible about keeping my HR down during hills. I've got a plan and as long as I can do each step, I should be good. I've got 2 1/2 months.

AverageSue : Hill ladders are good training. We used to run two street poles up and one down, working our way up the hill of about 10 poles.

Zone 2 training is also a pretty popular approach these days. Are you going after a certain pace?

mypeez :
Nope. No particular pace. RN, I just want to "perform well", which means (for me) to keep my HR low and to finish being consistent in this strategy. I can set limits on my vivoactive watch that will haptic (as well as provide audio if I have earbuds in) when I've reached my "eject" level. Having the uber high HR in June concerned me. I ran a 5k years ago where there was someone on my team that had a heart attack close to the finish line, and he's in far better shape than I.

AverageSue : Just as an FYI, consumer HR monitors are not very accurate. My old Garmin HR chest strap would sometimes have me hitting 200+bpm, my doctor was like no way Emoticon.

My perceived effort was super high and I couldn't catch my breath, felt like **** all day. I do tend to go "all in". It was a hot, humid, hilly run. I'm just going to slow my roll. I'm doing the same distance but the slower pace doesn't make me feel like garbage the whole day.

Today, my perceived effort matched my HR numbers. I know when I'm pushing the envelope and when it's just a workout. June was pushing the envelope. I just hope I keep the mindset next race day. I'm not going to win so I don't need all-in the whole time.

Chest straps are supposed to be very accurate, better than watch which uses diff tech. The wrist ones pick up motion instead of blood flow. But not the chest straps.

My wrist one was not tracking well on Monday. I'd check in periodically using the sensors on the treadmill. So I pulled out my Polar for today's session. They were in sync.

AverageSue : Correct, but as the chest strap part wears / ages they get weird. I probably am on my 4th replacement fabric strap and have pretty much sidelined it for the convenience of the watch based one.

As far as going full Prefontaine, remember the rule of thumb: 220 - your age = max HR. Since you are using a Garmin, check out the Zone logging in Garmin Connect. It should be logging Zones in the workouts, try to hold your Zone 2 HR as your upper for a training run and see how that feels.

mypeez :
Yeah the max HR calc... I was above max in June.

I'm going up to the top of Zone 2 before I slow down a bit.

Side note: my niece dog sits for a friend... They named their miniature Greyhound Prefontaine. Shortened to Pre.

Are you on heart meds? Don't answer if you don't want to/TMI. I'm on two and both slow my heart rate on purpose. Pisses me off. If I push too hard I either wear out fast or get dizzy/lightheaded. If I wanted to feel old, I'd watch Lawrence Welk reruns and eat pureed peas.

AntiRanchDrssng :
No, not on heart meds. My BP and HR are both great. I'm just not in shape and trying too hard out the gate. I need to condition myself. I have run with this group for years but inconsistent. Last summer I was doing well(ish) getting ready for my 10k but then I went for a hike and jammed my lower back, quad, hammies, hip flexor .. I'd get a block into my run and jammed again.

Anyway, I'm doing a methodical approach to HR training.

Just finished one full week of training for the 10k. So far so good. I'm doing a slow ramp up so I am better conditioned to continue after the 10k. Today was an active recovery day, which was a stroll in the woods. I love forest therapy!

Today is my "long day run" and it's 84% humidity. Slow rollin' it today! I usually just drink water on my runs but for this kind of weather, I need electrolytes!
