Illinois Unclaimed Property

I just scored (or reclaimed would be more accurate) a couple hundred bucks. It's like getting a big tax refund; you know you're only getting it because you screwed up, but it's still feels like winning the little lotto!

Have you checked yours lately?

I have looked at this before.... there is a whole mess of unclaimed stuff from my deceased family. The whole process of claiming it, still is not worth the hassle.

Example... there is money from a dead uncle. He had no children. His estate passed to my father. When my father died it would have passed to my mother... when she died it would have passed to myself and my sister. The amount of paperwork and the cost to acquire the paperwork makes it not worth it.

Taken as a whole... it might be worth a few hundred or even be over $1000 but each of the individual amounts requires proof of relationship. I don't have a stack of death certificates and closed estate documents and ....

All of these petty claims should have been taken care of by the estate/trust... but they were not.

I have a page and a half of dead relatives on there too with tiny amounts no-one wanted to deal with. My Dad echoed your sentiments - most of them weren't worth the hassle.

BUT ..... when you find YOUR name.
