Ideas For Comfortable Shoes When You Have Gout.....

I have a severe case of Gout in my right foot side of big toe, VERY painful and swollen on top of foot. I been on meds I take for 6 days, finish tomorrow.
I need to find a comfortable shoe, will have to be very wide with, as all my current shoes are painful to wear on that foot.
Suggestions ?

Check your diet. The swelling should have gone down after 6 days of meds. Or maybe you need a different prescription. When mine flares up, the swelling usually goes down within 48 hours of the first pill. It swelled so big once, my skin split. I feel your pain.

My husband has gout in his big toe too.

He will wear an open toe sandal, where the top is a big Velcro strap that fully opens, so he doesn't have to slide his foot into. Its ugly, especially when he wears it with socks and leg wraps. Fashion goes out the window when you have to deal with medical issues, doesn't it.

Its kind of like this one:

When I needed shoes that I could wear with a broken toe, I headed straight for Moser's on SW Adams.

Msgem, try the Easy Spirit website. They carry XXW shoes and their "Traveltime" collection is very soft and comfortable. Hope you feel better soon! I don't have gout, but do have something called "hallux rigidus"....the joint that joins my big toe to my foot (on both feet) is fused and now I have severe arthritis in both joints...the doc says that ballet dancers get this...aahahahahaha!

My Lord, Ms. Gem... What did the doctor give you that you have found no relief in 6 days? Skittles? I haven't had a flair up in ages, but usually Indometacin knocks that shiit back in 48 hours or so. Even after I was warned not to take it anymore due to it being a NSAID, I was given Colchicine which took a bit longer (and gave a nasty case of the runs....which hurt like hell when you had to run to the bathroom.....) but not 6 days. Personally, I found warm compresses gave me more temporary relief than cold.

Can't help ya with footwear: I used to wear a "boot" that I had to wear when I had a stress fracture in my foot.

Feel for you. That shiit hurts.

My hubby has that problem too Ms. Gem, lots of the common meds used for gout can't be used with other medications that he takes.

@Msgem Dr. Scholl's has always been the way to go. @RambleOn has the best idea Moser's they actually care for ones with these types of problems.
Hope you find something that works its really hard not being comfortable and doing what needs to be done everyday.

Your doc got it figured out or do some of us PDCers need to make an office "visit"? I'm fortunate to have a sister who can always give me second opinions on situations like this.
