Housing formerly known as Taft

In my first month as a part time Uber driver, I've picked up three people so far, all women, from the new Providence Pointe. I asked all three how they liked them.

The first rider said they were really really nice. I could tell she just wanted to take her ride in peace without entertaining me with chit chat, but her infectious smile told me she was being sincere in her assessment.

The second one, a lovely elderly lady, gushed about them for nearly the entirety of the 10 minute drive across the river to the Levee district. She loved the new (and modern) washer and dryer, the glass stovetop, and the microwave suspended under the cabinets. Most of all she liked the price, which for her, in a single unit, was just under $300 a month including utilities. She said her natural gas bill at the house she previously lived in with her aging Dad cost more than that by itself. She added that whoever gets her unit next will get a shiny new dishwasher because she doesn't use it and thinks it's an unnecessary extravagance. She's content doing the dishes by hand, just like she's done all her life.

The third rider had a different take. She started by saying the outside of her unit was already riddled with bullet holes and, knowing she had my ear, went on about the drug addicts and gang members that live in and roam around there. I asked about the screening process, to which she scoffed, "Screening process? There is no screening process!" Needless to say, she's already looking to move.

While she was the only one out of the three to have large and vocal concerns, she did concede that the units themselves were quite nice --- if they could only keep the riff raff out.

@PeoriaIllinoisan :
I wonder if it is the residents themselves that are the "riff raff" or their associates who visit. Did she make the distinction?

@PeoriaIllinoisan: One out of three aent BAD. The place will always be a mess until the community starts policing itself instead blaming others for the problems.

@WalterPeck1984 : I partially agree with you. I spent a fair amount of time as Manager at Taft Homes. I retired in 2011, so it has been awhile since I have been there. At that time, I would say that at least 2 out of 3 were good, hard working residents. That other 1 may have been just fine, but allowed friends and/or relatives to control the activity in and around the unit. Sometimes it was a person living in the unit, but not on the lease. Hard to prove they were living there, though. A good number of problems were caused by people just passing through.

@PeoriaIllinoisan :
Now reason on this. We as Jehovah witnesses do just as you do here. Knock and have a polite conversation with the persons whom it may be. Like you said some like to talk while others may not.

@WalterPeck1984 : You said it people know who them has guns yet. When they tell police are afraid then the hood goes back on the snitch.
Like you said no body will do nothing.

@WalterPeck1984 : I was thinking more along the lines of two out of three ain't bad.

@AntiRanchDrssng : I want them to be a success like the ones on MacArthur Hwy seem to be, so I'm going to say the riff raff are outsiders ... but she didn't specify.

@RambleOn: I have been watching to much of the wild fire coverage in California and I think it's blurred my sense of humanity. You were at the ground level and I have not been so you would and have a better understanding than me. People are people and I am just a squirrel trying to get nut.

@PeoriaIllinoisan: The movie Mars Attacks popped into my head so I took the line from that movie and made it fit. Lol

It took a few years for Riverwest (formerly Warner Homes) to begin reverting to gangland. I guess it only takes a few months now for all that public investment to start turning to s**t. Start having PPD heavily patrol and somebody will scream RACISM!!!

BTW, I would love to have PPD heavily patrol my 'hood.

@TB1977 : The first families moved into RiverWest in 1997. That is twenty-seven plus years. I don't have crime statistics for the development, but know there has been at least one fatal shooting and a home or two hit by gun fire. Any death or gun shots are too many, but the level of crime in RiverWest seems low for the surrounding area. The area still looks pretty darn good.

Tafts problems have almost always been about the 'extras'. Grandma gets a unit... feels sorry for son or grandson... lets them stay for a while... they are not supposed to have extra family or friends living with them but it happens. That is where the problems begin. It isn't so much the people on the lease that are committing the crimes, its the semi permanent visitors and guests that are.

It is all hard to enforce because everyone is savvy enough to pipe it down when someone official comes around. Problems become out of sight out of mind...

Grandma gets a unit.

@Mahkno : Now with that said they know who the problems are. Next step is for them Judges and others to apply laws that keep crime down. What do they do to someone who don't belong there. When they just keep coming back. Buy a plane ticket and send them away.

Just need to add a liquor store and a food mart and this place would be happening.

Public housing will always be a problem 'cause most of the people don't care. The ones that do get told to ****.
