Haven't had a great horseshoe sandwich in years. When I lived near Mt. Pulaski, there was a restaurant on the square called The Red Door and they had a fantastic horseshoe! I imagine they have been closed for years.

I haven't eaten one in awhile, Donnelly's wasn't too bad.

Oogie's was my first exposure to one. Not sure how it rated against others though. The Peoria location was near Donnelly's on Glen.

It really is about the cheese sauce. Now Monicals does not do horseshoes but they have the best cheddar sauce for dipping. I've asked them numerous of times, "What is the brand of your cheese sauce?" they won't tell me. I don't think it's a secret, just don't think the employees actually know.I consider myself a connoisseur of three food items and when they are not good I get disappointed.
First the classic biscuits and sausage gravy, Philly cheese steak sandwich and the good old horseshoe.I can't tell you where to get a good horseshoe, haven't had a good one in years. But I can tell you where they aren't very good. Castaways in Chillicothe, tried it last weekend. Their cheese sauce is not good. Not horrible, but not good. It's all about the cheese sauce it really is............

@Mac57 : Great question and I can honestly say I haven't had a "good" philly cheese steak sandwich here in Peoria for a long time. Khouri's food to me is uh. Not horrible but nothing to get excited about either. I actually had a decent philly down at a Chiefs game a couple weeks back. Who would have thought that?
