Help for gas prices stopping speeders.
Major Update: Vehicle Speed Limiting /tracking devices will be installed in vehicles in Illinois starting January 1, 2028. The law passed the Illinois senate on Wednesday and awaits JB Pritzker's signature.
The law states that if you get two speeding tickets or more, you will be required to have a speed limiting/tracking device in your car and truck under a new law proposed by Illinois Democrats. The law would also apply to those who get tickets for reckless driving.

Violators would have to have the device installed for three years! This device, known as an Intelligent Speed Assistant device (ISA) would have to be in your car or truck plus pay $30.00 a month "monitoring /tracking fee" to the state. Big brother will be in your backseat
The law, HB4948, introduced by Illinois Democrat Martha Dueter, mandates drivers with two qualifying speeding or reckless driving offenses within 12 months face license suspension until they install an approved active ISA device. They must remain in the program for 1-3 years, data limits, and penalties for violations. The program would begin January 1, 2028.
The legislation was supported by all Democrats and sadly, some local Republicans also voted for this tracking legislation Including Senator Dave Syverson, State Representative Jeff Keicher State Senator Sue Rezin State Representative Bradley Fritts-very disappointed!
Note: These devices often include GPS sensors that immediately notify authorities if speed is exceeded. In addition, your location will be tracked by the State of Illinois.

If it was a tracker for ALL vehicles, I'd be against it.
Chronic speeders/reckless drivers? I think I'm okay with that. It says 2 within 12 months.

It will most likely be a cellular device. To me that's the worst thing about it. They say that it will be after 2 violations, but it is a slippery slope. The $30/month revenue will be hard for the government to let go of. Right now if you get 3 speeding violations you have to take the safety course to keep your license. Not sure if it is for the 15 to 25 over violation or if the lesser 5-15 over violation counts as well.

What if someone removes the device from the vehicle?

There are places where the police can write tickets all day for speeding. Why not enforce the laws that we have? I'm all for reducing speeding, by why not do it the traditional way? 65MPH on a 55MHz non divided highway roughly doubles the fatality rate. It makes a difference.

I'm in favor of a law to make sure the tread on at least one rear tire is within safe limits. A number of serious crashes have resulted from worn out or improperly rotated rear tires on wet roads. I know of a crash that killed 4 that was likely do to this a few years ago.

They might just use this as a location tracking device and $30/month revenue device and not even use it to enforce speeding, like they already don't do on most highways. They could increase the fines for speeding as well. I think this proposed system has more to do with a possible deal with the company that will provide the devices, government revenue, and not so much about safety.

@MadScientist : Currently, 60% of all police agencies in the state of Illinois face a staffing shortage, with some reporting a deficit of more than 25%. Alternative methods of enforcement are necessary to cover the shortage. csbs.research.illino is.edu/wp-content/up loads/2024/06/Griffi n-Caleb-Police- With the retirement cliff and the expense of the pensions that accompany it, the funds don't exist to replace that shortage, not to mention a declining interest of viable candidates as well as a seemingly perceived lack of elected official support . The state has upped the money invested in training and is pushing several classes through academy- but finding people to enforce the existing laws with the criterion for hiring as it exists is proving an extreme challenge.

I don't disagree with all of what you are saying, however, I grew up in Pennsylvania and they have a very strict state annual inspection for car registration. Once you check in with the mechanic, you can't leave until all of their findings are rectified - which was very difficult for many to do, especially when it could mean new tires, or replacing a windshield, etc. - all on top of the registration fee.

I am not a fan of being able to buy your way out of consequences, which this feels like. For the low low price of $30/month, you can avoid losing your license for the requisite time since you chose to speed. I would prefer a camera capture the car make and license plate of the speeding offender (first or thirty first offense) and once they hit the two speeding periods they get a six month suspension.

People have no clue. It takes 60 seconds to travel from one mile marker to the next when driving at 60 miles per hour. While many believe Google Maps or any other downloaded map version is completely accessible. We only get so much while everyone could have free internet but then it would open the new meaning to who can and who can't. Homes land phones all yet pay is demanded we say we own is not ours.

Common sense reveals the route you've taken, with speed limits posted along the way. With some AI adjustments, anyone could end up getting a ticket for each violation. Free internet
