Gas Prices on the Downhill

For now, since turmoil in Switzerland and school yard-type bullying talk still flows out from DC...

Pekin's gas prices have dropped from $4.29 the other day to $3.89 today..(I filled up Friday in North Pekin at $4.22)

But when wife and I were in Springfield Saturday for Father's Day, I noticed a station just south of I-72 near the Monicals we ate at, with the prices of $3.75. Other gas stations at Sangamon and Dirksen Parkway were around $3.94.
So why is it that Peoria gas is so much more than Springfield? The Peoria local gas tax isn't that much.

I would think the difference in companies/fuel suppliers that service the areas could make a difference. But, the price of gas just seems to be based on vibes lately. For the past month or so, I've noticed prices vary greatly, even within the same city.

Where I live, there are some fuel stations that have regular unleaded gas for under $3 a gallon. Meanwhile, a couple miles across town, others have regular unleaded gas at $3.599/gal. Does it make sense? No! But I guess this is just the crazy world we're living in right now.

99.9% of it is greed and what are you going to do about it?.......Nothing. You need the gas and you will pay it.

@chriscervantes - I use the phrase "that is the world we live in",... all the time. I will likely now use the term "crazy world" from now on.

@DennisinPeoria :
None of it really makes sense. I was in Mark Twain National Forest last week. I saw gas in the middle of nowhere for $3.49 so I filled up. Yet I noticed in Salem, MO, where there are several stations, thusly competition and is one a major state highway, gas was $3.79-89. The swing in StL (according to Gas Buddy) is $.40 and those two opposites are very close to each other.
I even think Beck's on War Drive has been threatened by the Peoria Gas Mafia. They always used to be just 5-10 cents or so higher than Costco. Of late, they are arguably always one of the cheaper stations in Peoria, but no longer rivaling Costco. Right now, there is a $.40 difference.

I think they have to buy fuel at the current price and then deal with selling what they have, potentially at a loss, if prices are falling. So they like to make some profit to cover that risk. If they sell 3000 gallons per day, a 20 cent per gallon price increase is $600 per day.

The Peoria stations have to deal with high property taxes and crime.

I've seen Hyvee on Lake and Sheridan put their regular E10 on sale for certain hours of the day before.

@MadScientist :
Property taxes are high everywhere in Illinois, so you are correct there and Peoria stations probably have to pay a lot of Rainwater tax and 5 cent city tax on top of that. According to Gas Buddy, the lowest priced gas in Peoria proper* is $4.24. East Peoria's cheapest (not Costco) is $4.08. This kinda makes sense to make up those costs.
* Yet several places in Pekin, Green Valley, Washburn, Creve Couer, and Bartonville are under $4. One has to wonder how a gas station in Washburn offsets transportation costs AND has

Just looked at Gas Buddy for East Peoria and the top 10 stations are all under $4. The top seven are under $3.90.

@DennisinPeoria :
$3.49 or $4.49? I don't see anything on Gas Buddy in Peoria proper under $4. A lot of places in Pekin & Bartonville are under $4.
