Dunlap High School Senior dies in late night crash

PEORIA (25News Now) - A head-on crash near the Louisville Slugger Complex late Saturday night has left a Dunlap High School Senior dead.

The Peoria County Coroner says the crash happened just before 11:45 PM Saturday night on North Orange Prairie Road, near the Louisville Slugger Complex.

Coroner Jamie Harwood says 18-year-old Nevaeh Mitchell of Princeville was reportedly heading northbound on Orange Prairie Road when her vehicle was hit head-on by a southbound vehicle in the northbound lanes.

An autopsy is scheduled to take place on Tuesday.

No doubt this is a huge tragedy. Every time someone dies in any kind of accident I look for the name to see if I knew him/her. Why don't we feel that same sense of tragedy when someone on the southside dies from a bullet or other act of violence? I'm not in any way trying to take away from this particular tragedy, but is it not true that we treat them differently? Surely I can't be the only one whose jaw drops when they see this sort of headline yet we're desensitized to other violent deaths of innocent young men and women. I can't rectify this in my brain and it bothers me.

@PeoriaIllinoisan :
Nothing personal, but I'm quite the opposite. Any accident, whether a southside shooting, car accident or accident on the job, I'm anxious to hear the name.
Maybe it's my years of listening to the scanner, but when I hear this call last night, I knew it was either young or VIP.

I will add, probably the most important person that should be paying attention to each of these homicides regardless of location and possible cause is the police chief. And I can say including last night, I've heard him on the radio at the scene.
While it may not help to reduce the crime, he is at least there getting information first hand.

One of my students was shot and survived. There were definitely changes and maybe life altering aflictions to this kid. Guess better than being dead, but a life altering situation.

@CCubs :
Already 2 memorials out near the site of the crash. One is about halfway between Louisville Slugger and Hy-Vee alongside the Southbound lanes. Another one (which I didn't see) apparently is in the median a little north of Louisville.

@Whit :
Even the Peoria Police FB page did not say anything about the other driver being DUI. And what they post is the same as what is sent to the media.

How do you know about the other driver being DUI? Did his car come to your auto body shop?

Here is what the PPD initially reported:

(PEORIA, IL) Saturday, May 4, 2024, at approximately 11:38 p.m. Peoria Police responded to a two-car accident in the 8400 block of N. Orange Prairie Road.
When officers arrived, they located two vehicles that struck each other head-on.
The driver of one of the vehicles' an adult female was pronounced deceased on scene.
The driver of the second vehicle, an adult male was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The identity of the deceased and cause of death will be released by the Peoria County Coroner.
Members of the Peoria Police Department's Traffic Unit and Patrol Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation.
This incident remains under investigation. No arrest was made.
If you have any information regarding any violent crimes, please contact the Peoria Police Department at (309) 673-4521, tip411 (anonymously), or Crime Stoppers (anonymously) at (309) 673-9000.

Also, the city limits boundaries run along Orange Prairie road up past Louisville Slugger, and stretches out US 150 past Orange Prairie road. So definitely Peoria Police department jurisdiction.

Key questions still remain unanswered about the crash that killed 18-year-old Nevaeh Mitchell, including whether criminal charges are being pursued in the case and what led to the vehicle that struck her being in the wrong lane.

Peoria police spokesperson Amy Dotson told the Journal Star on Friday morning that no new information was available. The Journal Star has filed a Freedom of Information Act request for information regarding the case.

It is odd that this has been kept under wraps.
