Downtown 2-way streets......

I made the mistake of trying to pass the civic center at about 6:15 tonight. I was on Monroe and about to cross main when traffic suddenly stopped and the light changed to yellow. As opposed to sitting in the intersection and blocking traffic, I turned left and went down to Jefferson. When I turned onto Jefferson, all 4 lanes were solid, bumper to bumper traffic, but moving slowly.
I knew the home show was going one, but surely all this traffic couldn't be for that.

Once I got where I was going, I looked it up.... Bradley game and singer Phil Wickman both shows starting at 7pm.

Nice to see all those HRA tax dollars coming in, but then I remembered.....Soon Jefferson is going to be a 1 lane 2-way street.....How's that going to work?

Great question. Those who consumed hallucinogenics and voted to do this may be able to answer that. RIP Gary Sandburg.

My guess is that it will be one lane of bumper-to-bumper traffic moving slowly.

A far as I know... they are not removing lanes of traffic. They are just realigning directions. You don't build roads for infrequent special events. You build them for how they are used day to day.

Honestly they could probably take away a lane or two with little impact on overall traffic flow. People will still complain because they perceive it all to be more congested... even if it is not.

@Mahkno :
Yes, Adams and Jefferson are being reduced to 1 lane each direction, plus a turn lane, and a bike lane. Similar to what they've done to McArthur Highway, Western, Forrest Hill, and Prospect. Plus building out corners at intersections so pedestrians can cross easier. Parking will still be available on both sides, however.
Here's a story link that shows a couple quick shots of how Adams and Jefferson will look. Parking bans on one side of Adams already start March 4:

@PeoriaChronicle :
If that is the case, the city should think this all the way through before starting the project. What about police, fire trucks, ambulances getting through and what happens if there is an accident stopping the one lane of traffic?
Multiple cities have had a version of this idea in place for a couple of years . They had to go back and make very costly adjustments to allow for those situations,
In nearly all cities where that plan has been implemented the number of bicycle riders has been far, far, far under the projected numbers.

@billybob : Think they were guessing on battery powered coming to life. Making way for the gasless living.

Same way they're doing it now on the main arterial roads I mentioned that used to be 4 lanes with a turn lane or no turn lane.

People will have to drive slower and pay attention. Wow, is that so bad?

Only if they have to sit through two cycles of a traffic light.

I never like to use my car horn when driving if at all possible. But I had to do so twice in the past week because someone in front of me was sitting still at a green light, head down. 🙃

When I went through driver's ed (lo, these many years ago), they used to talk about giving someone a "friendly tap of the horn," which I always found hilarious. Nobody on the receiving end of a honk ever perceives it as "friendly," no matter how short, unless they happen to know the person in the other car.
