Dick VanDyke and his brother were from IL, I think Danville. Their parents actually moved to Peoria and lived in the brick apartments on Knoxville Ave. directly to the North of the Shell gas station at the corner of Knoxville Ave./Lake Ave. My mom used to work Downtown Peoria at the Jefferson Hotel as a waitress and she said Mr. and Mrs. Van Dyke would come to the hotel for dinner and drinks and she would often wait on them.

@JL0129 :

Probably not but who knows. Dick Van Dyke was raised in Danville. Don't know the background or details about the parents move to Peoria but it happened in the early to mid 60s. The Journal Star did a big article about them including mentioning the apartment building where they lived.

Years later we saw Bobby Short perform and he mentioned how he was in the same high school class with Dick Van Dyke and Donald O'Connor. A lot of talent in that class.

By chance do you remember about when the Jefferson Hotel closed or when it was demolished? I think it stood empty for some years before it was demolished to make for the civic center.

Seems like many famous people have come out of Illinois. Even Peoria has spit a few out as well.

Long time ago, I made several trips to Danville shooting videos for a client. There was a George's Buffet near an industrial plant that had great food,.plus many pictures of the two Van Dyke brothers visiting. The buffet has since closed.

In 2016, Dick visited his high school, talking to show choir students and more. He even got up on stage with the group for a quick dance step or two.

(There are other news media links as well)

If I recall correctly, he was also in town to support a preservation group to save his old home from being torn down by the city.

Mary Poppins Returns just came out on DVD. Dick VanDyke shows he still has some dancing legs left in him. Wife and I enjoyed that movie at the theater.

@DennisinMH : So, Dick Van Dyke is still alive, but, his brother Jerry Van Dyke passed away a few years ago. Is that correct?

@billybob : Jerry Van Dyke was funnier than heck. Wasn't he in a silly sitcom called "My Mother The Car"?
