The Salvation Army does good work... but I do take issue to the ever expanding silo of poverty that this project embodies. If you are homeless in the far north of Peoria (61615, 61525), you will be encouraged to relocate to the near north side where this new expanded shelter will be. This is by design, to push poverty out of the far north and house it in the near north side (61603). This is siloing. Push the poor out and house them into a concentrated area far removed from the well healed of society.

I would much rather see the Salvation Army open up a shelter in that band of Peoria between Allen Rd and Knoxville, north of Pioneer Park, south of Mossville Rd.. There are lots of potential jobs in that area for those with limited skills and down on their luck. There are already a lot of homeless people up there hiding away in various places.

If you talk to the homeless and read up on it.... they do not trust shelters. They are not safe enough. A big part of that problem is how the shelters try to pack people in. This new shelter is all about packing ever more people in. This is efficiency of scale for the Salvation Army... but not at all what these struggling individuals need most, which is a place to call their own.... or with many fewer roommates. Multiple smaller shelters would allow individuals to be more selective about who they shelter with.

@Mahkno :
In one if the cities we lived in, the homeless could register for various programs that gave them bus passes, library cards, IDs, and a small storage locker.

The locker wasn't big enough to sleep in, but was certainly big enough to store clean clothes, hygiene products, and personal effects. The bus pass and library card allowed them to get employment and get to medical, social service, and court appointments.

I have no idea about the shelter situation, but I'm guessing it was equally well thought out.

The caveat was a strict, zero tolerance policy on panhandling and public disturbances.

@Mahkno: I can tell for a fact that the homeless in Peoria do not like shelters because they don't want rules. Oh and as for spreading them out no thank you. I don't want dope smoking, party hardy thievs and beggers in my neighborhood. This might sound heartless but it's the truth. The shelters in Peoria are well managed and safe.

I have worked lived and provided for many of these ones in Peoria over the years. Wake me up at 3 in the morning, Sure ill drive you to the hospital. Get there take off running?
Open your bad door and someone is standing soaking wet. Give them cloths to dry off.
Surely you wouldn't want that in your neighborhood. Hard ships befall us all how will you act when it comes.

I am out tomorrow but what about Tuesday. I know the place well. Who are you to Judge me. I am a follower of one of Peoria's greatest citizens Robert Green Ingersoll. I have and do help people in need. I troll through these post and you always have a lot to say about nothing. So lets meet and go hang out with the poor homeless people. Maybe we should start behind big lots on sterling and move on from there.

@WalterPeck1984 :
They serve food from 11:30 to 12:30 downtown unless that's changed. It's been a few years since I moved to East Peoria. It wasn't that I was tired of the homeless or the problems. There was a lady shot in our back yard. Like most would my wife needed a safer place.
