@tntrecycling :
The trades have apprenticeships. Get trained on the job and make a decent living while doing it. What could possibly be wrong with that system? The high school I went to still has vocational classes like woodworking, metalworking and auto mech. Anything beyond that is considered "continuing education". Why should tax dollars be used to train a plumber, but not an accountant?

@skutfarcus :
don't ya know, you are supposed to come out of the womb with all that knowledge??!! or not know anything about anything and magically know how to do HVAC.

In all seriousness, we need public education to teach basic communication skills, at the very least. We need to have basic skills.

@skutfarcus :
You have to be 17 to get into these programs. Today you can't work for an employer at 16 or 15 even and run a mower or even push a button on a trash compactor. What used to be learned from home and take over family business is gone.
I have worked over countless different jobs since 13, Deep Rock gas station check oil, fill up with gas, clean windshield. I would of went into the garage next but Opel`s truck stop needed a dish washer.

Not everyone has the same skill set as their daddy.
Trade schools... where you learn from professionals in a field that just might not be what your pappy did for a living.
I mean, some trades are obsolete. Blacksmith would be one.

The fact some people can't see beyond their own experience is astounding!

@AverageSue :
And not just the trades. I used to be able to translate Law French to modern English; it's much quicker and easier to use a translation app to do that now. I doubt there's a need at all for that skill set now.

My dad worked at CAT mostly as a machine repairman. Growing up, I never seriously considered working at CAT. I was 15 when I visited a college radio station, and decided being a DJ was what I wanted. But life took me into video and TV broadcasting instead, with no regrets.

My dad never really taught me some basics of home repairs. But I have replaced faucets, ceiling lights, dryer heating elements, and some light switches. Instructions included helps a lot.

@DennisinPeoria :
I have learned some basic home repair skills from YT.
My mom was a secretary, my dad never really came back from Vietnam. PTSD most likely. Stayed overseas most of my life after he got out of the service. I was really good with math, so went into STEM in college. Life brought me to the finance world.

I get to see children learn the same as the adults. Why won't you teach them?

@tntrecycling :
I did have teachers. Obviously people are teaching. What's nice is that teachers can teach skills that the parents just might not have. My two sons are very smart in their fields, and they differ from mine.

Good old America....When you get a chance to work with ones not from this country. Listen to how they were taught in schools while they were young. Look at the advancement they have when it comes to certain abilities. Yes, again were all not taught the same, yet we are graded the same.
