Illinois Democrats accuse Darren Bailey of failing to disclose who provides rent-free Chicago apartment
Dan Petrella - Chicago Tribune (TNS) 9 hrs ago
www.hastingstribune. com/ap/personal_fina nce/illinois-democra ts-accuse-darre
The Illinois Democratic Party has accused Darren Bailey, the Republican nominee for governor, of violating state campaign disclosure law by failing to publicly reveal who is providing him with a rent-free downtown Chicago apartment, where he has been staying since the spring.

Bailey on the campaign trail has told downstate supporters that he and his wife have been staying in Chicago since the day after the March 17 primary thanks to "a doctor that's been gracious enough to donate his apartment for us to stay in the Grant Park area," according to the complaint, which Ben Hardin, executive director of the state Democratic Party, filed Monday with the Illinois State Board of Elections.

By failing to report the arrangement, the complaint alleges, Bailey has violated the requirement that candidates report "anything of value, knowingly received in connection with the nomination for election, election, or retention of any candidate or person to or in public office." That includes in-kind contributions such as donated services or property.

"Mr. Bailey's own remarks demonstrate that he 'knowingly received' the apartment 'in connection with' his campaign for the Governorship," says the complaint, which links to videos of Bailey's comments. "The record leaves no doubt. Mr. Bailey moved into the apartment the day after he won the Republican primary, described it as a headquarters for his Chicago-area campaign operation, and uses it as a base for meeting voters. He even bragged that building staff has asked for campaign 'cards and materials.'"

Average rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the area is $2,965 a month, according to the complaint, first reported by WGN-TV. That is well over the $1,000 threshold at which contributions must be reported to election officials within five business days, or within two business days in the 30 days before an election.

Bailey's campaign hasn't disclosed any such in-kind donation, either on the stand-alone reports required for large contributions or on its quarterly reports for the first half of the year, the complaint alleges. Quarterly reports covering July through September are due next week.

"This is unethical and illegal - and Illinoisans deserve answers," state Rep. Lisa Hernandez, chair of the state Democratic Party, said in a statement Tuesday announcing the complaint. "The Democratic Party of Illinois is asking the Illinois State Board of Elections to immediately investigate these violations and demanding that Darren Bailey reveal who is funding his Chicago stopover."

Speaker Johnson and others have pulled the money for advertising in a congressional district in the Omaha, Nebraska. Don Bacon, the Republican incumbent, is retiring. The race for his successor is rated a 5-11 dumpster fire, Johnson sees no way they can recover. There are some ads that will still
]appear because they were already paid for but not aired. 16 other districts are under review for cutting off the money,

There was once a story about red and blue. It's unfortunate that no one seems to care for you.

I may be wrong, but I don't recall Nixon, Ford, or Reagan starting a MidEast war.
I was 9 when Nixon took office.

But it was bad enough for both Bushes and DJT to start wars over there. George HW Bush, I think, sent troops over to defend Kuwait, which was attacked by Saddam Hussein and Iraq.

Notes Indicate Nixon Interfered With 1968 Peace Talks

In October 1968, during the Paris Peace Talks, the U.S. was ready to agree to cease bombing Hanoi, the capital of North Vietnam, in exchange for concessions that would halt the decades-long conflict which eventually killed an estmiated 58,000 American soldiers, 2 million Vietnamese civilians and 1.1 million North Vietnamese and Viet Cong combatants. But suddenly, the day before the 1968 presidential election, a close race between Hubert Humphrey and Richard Nixon, South Vietnam inexplicably walked away from the negotiating table. Direct U.S. military involvement in the war lasted another five years.

For decades, rumors have swirled that Richard Nixon's presidential campaign had interfered in the Vietnam peace negotiations by sending a messages through Nixon aide Anna Chennault to the South Vietnamese embassy and on to President Nguyen van Thieu. The Nixon campaign, it was rumored, promised the South Vietnamese bigger concessions if they waited to negotiate peace until after Nixon was elected. The idea was to not give President Lyndon Johnson and Humphrey a PR victory by suspending the war before the election.

Now, political biographer John Farrell, writing in The New York Times' opinion section this weekend, reports that handwritten notes from Nixon's future White House Chief of Staff, H.R. Haldeman show evidence that the 36th president tried to secretly influence the peace talks while still a presidential candidate and a private citizen.

Throughout his lifetime Nixon and his aids vociferously denied that he would do any such thing. "My God. I would never do anything to encourage" South Vietnam "not to come to the table," Nixon is heard telling Johnson in a conversation taped in the White House, reports Farrell.

But over the years, more information about the incident leaked out. According to David Taylor at the BBC, in 2013 declassified tapes from Johnson's White House show that the FBI had intercepted Chennault's calls to the South Vietnamese ambassador telling them to "just hang through the election." Johnson also ordered the FBI to surveil the Nixon campaign and to figure out if Nixon was personally involved in the back channel operation.

I didn't know this about Nixon interfering with the Peace Talks while running for President. But the issue is MidEast wars, and Vietnam is not in the MidEast.
