Religious Thread

Decided to start this so others can spread their thoughts on religion (without any political commentary so it can be kept General, not Fast Lane).

It seems a few other threads end up tracking away from the original topic into religious discussion. Not wrong with that, but I feel that belongs separately from what the original topic was about.
Feel free to post whatever you want here, exercising the 1st Amendment which included freedom of the press and freedom of religion. Just don't push or go overboard that your religion or denomination is better than others in worshipping God or Jesus. Because no religion is better than another. It depends on your personal beliefs, and how you want to worship and have faith in the Almighty. If you're an atheist, that's ok too, you're still welcome to post.

For me, my paternal grandparents and dad were always Lutheran. There's Missouri Synod Lutherans, which is more strict on everyday life and ELCA, which is the Lutheran area I grew up in (name has changed over the years)
My parents joined a Lutheran church in Pekin in November, 1963 with me and my sister. I've been a member there ever since.
I got married there, my daughters were baptized there, they got married there, and my parents's and father in law's funerals were there. My Springfield daughter was active in church as a teen, and now both her husband and her are active with youth in their Lutheran church in Springfield. Younger daughter is a Lutheran member, but switches off attending her husband's Catholic masses with their daughter.

We happen to believe that baptism takes away your sin, but we always confess sins every Sunday as part of the service. We take communion every Sunday, although years ago it was always just the 1st Sunday. We hear sermons mostly based on the Gospel lesson that day, but we also worship and honor God and the Holy Spirit. Strong beliefs in God The Father, God the Son, and God The Holy Spirit. Our church congregation is small, mostly retired members, with only a few under the age of 60. We have just 1 family with children, unfortunately, but we've gained a few new middle aged members in the past year. However, our members are resilient, we donate to Pekin Outreach, Pekin's House of Hope (extension of CFPA), and host community events in the summer and a Trunk or Treat before Halloween. Just last November, we started Livestreaming our services, but I'm the only one that sits in a back room remotely operating the camera. No one else wants to learn it. So the camera stays on a wide shot when I'm up front as a Lay Assistant some Sundays.

Ok, I'm done, sorry for the long post. I'm interested in hearing others experiences in growing up in whatever church or denomination you belonged to.

@PeoriaChronicle :
Tell me if those 3 churches are still thriving. I'm open minded actually, because I'd like hearing others views on how they worship in their church. What their faith means to them.

Also, there's been a few times that if we didn't make it to our 9 am service, we have turned on Grace ALIVE on TV to watch that service.

Here God gave you the breath to accomplish all that you have done. He provided the steps in life for everything you have achieved, and He owns it all. Everything comes from God.
What has He asked of you? He has done all these things remember he did not have to give you breath.

Never thought of it that way. Beautiful; poetic. Thank you.

@Horsefly :
People don't understand that Jehovah God stands right next to you always. Sin you leave him he never goes anywhere. Sin takes you away from God. He is just waiting for you to realize without him. To dust we will return.

We hear people say they are Christian, or they say the walk with God. Yet do cruel things. See read the last words in the scripture. (2 Peter 2:4-6) . . .. 5 And he did not refrain from punishing an ancient world, but kept Noah, a preacher of righteousness, safe with seven others when he brought a flood upon a world of ungodly people. 6 And by reducing the cities of Sodʹom and Go·morʹrah to ashes, he condemned them, setting a pattern for ungodly people of things to come.

My wife and I are practicing Catholics who were raised and baptized in the church. I attended catholic schools in Peoria, as did my children and my parents before us.

I was baptized in the United Methodist Choice by my choice at age 12. Was active through high school. I was much less active when I left for college. Both of my kids were baptized as infants but I drifted away for a good number of years. With my youngest, I became active again for a while. I left organized religion at least 30 - 35 years ago. I have no problem with the beliefs of others as long as they are not forced upon me. I think of my self as Spiritual, but not religious.

My mom wasn't religious, but sent us to bible study classes. I think it was her "babysitter" option, tbh. I went to a Catholic bible study and a Protestant bible study. (grade school age)

In HS, I went to a Catholic church with my neighbors regularly. In my adult life, I attended a Protestant church and was a Sunday School teacher. My kids were baptized in a Protestant church. I've since walked away from the church.

I have a sister who is very involved in her church (Assembly of God). and a brother who converted to Catholicism (to marry my SIL) but doesn't practice. and another brother who will only step into a church for weddings or funerals. I don't know if he converted to Judaism to marry his wife or not, but they had a traditional Jewish wedding.

I'm with Ramble... I have no problem with your beliefs as long as they don't push that on me. I know some very awesome religious people and some horrible ones too. Being religious doesn't make you righteous.

Life parents studied with the witnesses. Dad and Mom both passed away before being baptized. Age 13 I went south wrong path in life1974. Age 53 seen what the world has become2014. Baptized as a Jehovah witness at 2018. What you live at any moment in time can be snatched away. We all return to God in what fashion will you return.

what fashion will you return

@tntrecycling : Technically, I will return as ashes that my kids can scatter when they are ready to. They know where I want them scattered.

@RambleOn :
We know we die, and people seem comfortable with that, as it's something seen every day. It stems from what we've experienced and absorbed in life. But what if, at age five, you were told you could live forever in perfect health, free of harm? If books showed evidence supporting this, would it change anything?

@tntrecycling : I don't deal well with "what if" questions. I prefer to deal with what is. I have no desire to live "forever". The Earth would be so overpopulated and distressed that I don't think it would be a pleasant experience no matter how healthy one was. I will just continue to try to make the best of each day

@RambleOn :
Thats what most people say. So your say that things will be just like they are now.
@RambleOn : Have you ever got to read the Bible?

@tntrecycling : No where did I say "things will be just like they are now." Tomorrow's reality will be different than today's. It could be weather, government action, the people I am around and all sorts of other variables. I simply said I will deal with whatever that reality is at any given moment. In answer to your question, I have not read the Bible from front to back, but I do remember a number of verses that have been incorporated into my daily life.
