Capitalism ruined christmas.
@joepyeweed : Mind if I elaborate????
Two years ago I was working with a physical therapist. During our session he asked, "Are you excited about Christmas?" My response: "No. It has no meaning anymore." Then I explained further.
"People are able to order anything they want, whenever they want, off of websites like Amazon. When I was a kid growing up, there was only one time a year that stores had certain items in stock. You weren't able to purchase toys except for that time of year. The Sears catalog, the JC Penney catalog, etc., only had that toy section ONE TIME A YEAR and it was magical for us kids to have it arrive at the house and pour through it on the floor. There was no way our parents could afford any of that stuff, but it sure was fun to look and dream and say, 'Wow! What fun it would be to have Santa bring that to our house!' Now people can just order anything they want, anytime of year. There's no specialness in it anymore."
Then I told him "Now Christmas has a totally different meaning to me. I give homemade gifts. I have a knack for sewing. So I'll give someone a 'coupon' for a shirt, top, whatever, and when they 'redeem it' I'll measure them, have them pick out the fabric and pattern, do the job for them, and they'll have it in a few months."
"I do it because I WANT to. I have to find a new way to make it special because it's just not special anymore."
