I remember celebrating the Bicentennial the summer 1976. My family went to a farm in Union, Il where they planted a giant flag in their fields. Also remember Freedom Train stopping in Peoria.

Awesome, I saw the Freedom Train on it's stop in St. Louis at the tracks in front of the Arch.
Note: not my picture. I think we had an 110 film camera back them.

There was also the Little House on the Prairie "Centennial" Celebration episode. That really struck me as a kid. Everything was '76 themed that year.
In 1976, at fifteen years old, I was just about to get my driver's license. Worked at Mac`s bargain auto parts. Gasoline was 25 cents a gallon. Most lawns were mowed for under 10 dollars. Newspapers were $1.10 a week. You could buy a full big block Chevelle for around $6000.00
1976 fill up my XR75 Honda with gas buy a pack of cigs and a coke and ride all day. Then insurance and payments for motorcycle was $12 dollars a month. At 13 everyone was riding, dad said you want a motorcycle you need to pay for insurance.
I got to meet and briefly talk to President Gerald Ford in 1976... he came through Blo-No by train. Being a young and passionate grade schooler.... I recall asking him to save the whales... he said he would look into it. lol .. I don't know if he did or not.
My parents were Republicans then... not really environmentalists... I think I picked it all up from the Ranger Rick and National Geographic magazines that I read. I was a very science focused child. I collected the bicentennial coins and $2 bills.... big stuff stuff when you are little. I still have the big $1 coins.
