8 you're great, 9 you're mine
There's a discussion on Reddit started by someone who got a ticket on I74 going 8 miles over going up the hill. I generally stick to no more than 3-5 mph over. Admittedly I've mellowed over time so I don't speed all that much. Wyoming's speed limit is 80 but when we visited I couldn't keep it up for the long haul and gravitated towards a comfortable 75. How fast (or slow) do you drive on the highway?

I try to stay below 10 over the speed limit at all times. 5 over is all right if conditions allow. On the Interstate about 65. There's a way to calculate fuel economy based on speed. At 65 MPH, a reasonable figure is that it will cost you $14.40 in fuel for every hour earlier that you arrive. So you have to earn at least that much to justify it. With more fuel efficient vehicles that have smaller engines and taller gearing, the fuel consumption rate is affected even more by speed. For instance going 66 instead of 65 will get you there 1 minute sooner, but it will cost you 24 cents more, which extrapolates to $14.40 per hour. For instance 55 to 56 could get you there 1 minute sooner but would cost you 18 cents more, which is $10.40 per hour. The energy consumption versus speed is huge on electric vehicles, because they have very little drive train loss. Most of the loss is wind resistance, where energy use per distance traveled increases at the square of the speed. You'll have close to 4 times the range at 40 MPH compared to 80 MPH. They raised the speed limit to match "How fast people usually drive anyway". With it posted at 70 8 over would be 78, which is reasonable for a ticket when it used to be 65.

Was it the 30th time he would speed through this area. Finally, they caught him. There's a black Camaro that turned the corner here and lights them up every time. The police officer has seen him and said I'll get him. One day the owner won't feel so good that 8 miles over.
It depends which vehicle I'm driving. The gas mileage in the Malibu doesn't change much if I travel 70mph vs. 80mph. The Tracker, on the other hand, 70 is its limit or it starts drinking gas like it's a top fuel dragster. Except for that, my rule of thumb is no more than 10% over the speed limit. However, if I'm on I-74 at 5:30 on a Sunday morning, and there is no construction (yeah, right
), I might push it a bit past that.
I find the logic that people will drive at a speed that is comfortable for them given the width of the roadway and the level of traffic on it, is pretty compelling. If you give people a wide open road, they are going to go faster and no amount of posted speed limit signage is going to 'solve' that. This is why people going 55 or even 65 on Knoxville or War Memorial occurs so regularly. Is it a problem?... I don't think so. I-55 through Springfield is posted at 55 mph. Unless its peak rush hour, most traffic is still going 70-75. On Friday... the Chicago peeps commute back home an its a solid 80 on I-55 heading north, especially when it turns to six lanes. The semi trucks are the regulating influence on I-55, otherwise 75-80 mph would be pretty common. If the semi-trucks are ignoring the 55 limit, they do, then everyone is going faster. There is a section of Chatham road, a north-south corridor street, that is normally posted at 40 or 45. When it passes through Leland Grove (the 'Heights' of Springfield), it inexplicably drops to 30 mph.... and then bounces back up once you are back in Springfield. **** like this is petty, arbitrary, and drivers mostly ignore it... even when the Leland Grove popo are lurking.

I usually keep it around 5 over. At the most. I'm an old man. I haven't been in a hurry for several years.
