Iowa is way cheaper We went to Iowa to visit my daughter and celebrate her birthday. Driving through Iowa, we got gas for $3.97. Meanwhile, here in Peoria, it's still $4.99, or sometimes a little cheaper. Amazing how much cheaper it is next door.

I've said before, what other states don't charge in gas taxes, they make up for it in other taxes and fees for residents. Grass is never greener on the other side.

How much taxpayer subsidized ethanol was in the fuel? Iowa has a very strong commitment ethanol... Are the Kum & Go's gone? Always elicited a chuckle seeing those in Iowa...
@PeoriaChronicle : Did you notice how the roads and bridges are crumbling all over the state!

Illinois residents love to complain... its a favorite pastime. That said... Illinois really does have a top notch road system. IDOT is a platinum level service to this state. Our roads are maintained better... but it's the subtle things too like design that really push it towards the top. The one off ramps which people rarely take notice of are much better designed than other states, particularly further south. Our highways have lane sized paved shoulders which are neglected in other states like Iowa. Our rural roads, county expenses, are mostly paved vs Iowa's gravel and dirt roadways. Illinois' IDOT has a much larger portfolio of maintenance than Iowa does. Illinois has a more significant mass transit system than Iowa does. That comes are a price... I think that is money well spent. To be controversial.... I think our gas prices should be much higher. Already with the prices the way they are now... more people are using mass transit! That is a public good. If we want solid mass transit options, we need to establish the funding sources to build it and create the carrots and sticks to encourage more people to use it.

Yes, I do. When was the last time you drove from Galesburg to Champaign on I-74 and there hasn't been construction? When is the last time you drove 474 and there wasn't construction. Great, they are repairing the roads but when are they EVER going to be done? It's like they are finding ways to spend money.
I don't know much about Iowa. Indiana and Missouri's gas is cheaper than ours. I know Indiana's license plate renewal is based on how new your car is. Guess that is a "tax the rich" strategy. I don't know where MO gets its money but I64 and I44 were pretty nice earlier this year.
It is just seems odd to me that some of the cheapest gas in IL is in BFE locations. You'd think the transportation costs to deliver gas there would be astronomical. According GasBuddy, the second cheapest gas in IL is in Washburn. Washburn. How much fuel does it take to deliver gas to Washburn? Maybe the station sells cheap gas but jacks the price up on Red Bull and beef jerky.

I am going to go ahead and say it again for the 1,000th time. For those of you that think Iowa, Missouri, Wisconsin, Arizona, Tennessee, Texas, Florida or any other state is a better choice as a place to live,... move there. Of course Illinois has its faults, but I guarantee you that every other state does too. Life is what you make it. If you are only looking for faults,... you will only find faults.

@CCubs: and I will. But leaving my almost 90 year old mother by herself because no other relatives are around would be the suck *** thing to do.
