Years ago I used to work at Carlos O Kellys which was in the building which most recently housed Burger Barge.
When that first building (now Fannie Mae) was under construction, customers facing that side of the lot were constantly asking us what they were building -- and would then get frustrated or even angry with us when we didn't know -- "but how could you not know? I mean it's RIGHT NEXT DOOR." I think they had this feeling that all the waitstaff had weekly meetings with the Mall Council or something.
At some point I got tired of being treated like I was stupid for not knowing, so when they asked, I started telling customers that it was going to be a maintenance facility for the Life Flight helicopter. Something about a loophole in the zoning regulations, and this was the only plot of land available in the tri-county area outside of the airports which would permit aircraft to land, and there were significant tax breaks for locating it near a residential area because it would save gas for people driving to work. There were large doors still in the sides of the building so I explained that was for the loading docks where parts trucks would make deliveries. I had this whole story down to perfection, adding bits here and there.
Not a single customer questioned this story which cracked me up... I mean think of the noise, the wind generated... oy.
About a year later I was taking an order and heard someone at another table saying "What do you mean a coffeeshop? That one guy told us it was going to be a helicopter store. "
