Now the Big Hollow Steak & Shake closed. My GF stopped to get a soda, and the was a sign saying the store was closed. She said there was a large truck there, and they were loading things from the store in the truck. I don't know if its permanent, or another "remodel". Crazy!

Dumb question, but is that the one by Target?

Hopefully this is not going to be another St. Louis kind of thing where multiple stores are closed in a below radar kind of situation. There are some youtube videos about that situation.

I would have thought the store on University just south of War Memorial would close before Big Hollow.

To me, S & S has been hit hard by Culvers in this area. I think Culvers has better food, better menu options, better service and staff, and above all, are cleaner. Just my 2 cents

@Skimo :
My wife and I used to eat at S&S quite often, either the Pekin or East Peoria one. We have eaten at the Big Hollow a few times. However, it got to the point where my wife had to ask that the burgers be "dry" meaning squeeze out the grease.
Then she decided Culver's burgers were less greasy, so we dine there instead. Except tonight, at Pekin Culver's , her single burger seemed more greasy than usual. We usually eat at EP Culver's.

The burgers at S&S never bothered me, plus I liked them better because you had servers. And baked beans. And Chili 3-way. And the best creamy coleslaw. Only downside is I think S&S changed their French fries. Not as tasty.

A little off topic, but I always got a kick out of the gent who works at Culvers at University location. He is the one who delivers the food to the tables, chats with most everyone, and says to you as he plops down the food with a smile "you're about to get culverized" Emoticon . Haven't been there in awhile and wonder if he still works there?? BTW, I think their walleye offered during Lent is excellent.
It is a shame with S & S as I think for a long time they had their own niche. Love their shakes...pricey but outstanding

culverized

@Skimo : As of about 2 weeks ago he was still there when we were there last. I always make it a point to stop him and ask him how his day is going and "is management treating you good?" You can see by the look on his face that he enjoys the interaction and someone is interested in him.

@Skimo :
I'm not a fan of Walleye, but I do love their Cod fish sandwiches. I'd get the Cod fish dinners more often if they weren't pricey as well.

@kraziebill : Dude makes me smile. The glass is certainly more than half full with him

Have had such poor service at S&S for the last couple times I went. Even had dirty coffee cups and silverware. Haven't been back in years.

It seems SnS is victim to their own overzealous marketing department.

Instead of continuing to concentrate on what they did well, they expanded the menu. That made it harder for employees to make accurate orders.
(In the past year, I've hated pulling through. Something seems to be wrong most of the time.)

And there was a push away from meals to value .. and probably cheaper ingredients.
(And the past (2) times I tried the 4 for $4, I only got (2) of the items)

So now they've created a restaurant that results in angry customers who don't crave their cheap food....and it takes forever so it doesn't have McDonalds redeeming fast factor.
