Cannabis Dispensaries

Peoria City Council having Planning and Zoning Commission discuss allowing dispensaries add drive thru lanes to their businesses. Illinois passed a state law allowing it, but gave cities the power to regulate how it's done.

What do others think of this? I'm not sure about it.

I think Trinity is probably the only one that could physically fit a drive thru. Cookies in the heights sure can't accommodate.

Maybe a drive-thru will help them compete with the guy on the corner selling for less. Emoticon

When you can walk into a bar, consume beyond the legal limit, and then drive away in your vehicle.
Question is how many DUI`s are reported as alcohol or drug related.
Drive thru is already in some buildings just the ok. What difference does it make if they walk it to their vehicle now or pull up to a window?

I don't have a problem with people going to a dispensaries, whether for medical or recreational weed. But for some reason the idea of drive through bothers me. Guess I need to ponder the idea for awhile.

I would think that drive tru weed sales are safer than drive thru liquor sales.

I don't think drive thru increase or decrease the odds of consuming in the vehicle.

Drive-thrus are a familiar feature at many establishments, including gas stations and pharmacies are common at many places.
Saying that the dispensary is a cause of what.
Pease tell me the difference of them walking it to the vehicle as they do now or pulling up to a window.

What tax dollars do they collect from a dispensary. Illinois grown is what is by law in stores. Work dollars stay in the state.

There's a large grow facility in Delavan. I have no idea how many people are employed there.

Planning and Zoning recommends approval with a special use permit.

PEORIA (25News Now) - The City of Peoria is weighing how to regulate drive-through cannabis sales after a new state law opened the door for dispensaries offering drive-thru and curbside pickup.

Peoria's Planning and Zoning Commission voted Thursday to recommend requiring dispensaries to receive special use approval. The recommendation goes before the Peoria City Council for final consideration.

Senate Bill 3222, signed into law by Gov. JB Pritzker on June 12, made a number of changes to Illinois' cannabis laws, including the Cannabis Regulation and Tax Act and Compassionate Use of Medical Cannabis Program Act.

The law allows licensed dispensing organizations to offer pickup or drive-thru locations for cannabis products. Dispensaries must still receive approval from the Illinois Department of Financial and Professional Regulation before offering those services.

The change left local governments to determine how drive-thru cannabis facilities would be handled under their own zoning rules.

In Peoria, cannabis dispensaries already require special use approval.

City staff recommended creating a different process for cannabis dispensaries.

Under the proposed amendment, an existing medical or adult-use cannabis dispensary wanting to add a drive-thru would be required to amend its special use approval. That means the proposal would go through a public hearing before the Planning and Zoning Commission before ultimately heading to the City Council.

The process would give city officials the opportunity to review proposed cannabis drive-thru individually rather than allowing qualifying projects to receive administrative approval.

The new state law made several other changes to cannabis regulations, including increasing possession limits and allowing dispensaries to remain open as late as 2 a.m.

According to city documents, the law also eliminates a requirement that dispensaries contract with third-party security companies. Social equity licensees can instead hire their own security personnel. City staff noted that while the change could reduce costs for those businesses, it could also reduce the city's ability to ensure security personnel are consistently trained and screened.

The Planning and Zoning Commission could have recommended treating cannabis drive-thru applications the same as other retail businesses or prohibiting them altogether. Instead, commissioners recommended the special use process.

No surprise the PZ Commission approved it.
