University Walmart

Take this with a grain of salt, but twice in the past few weeks I've given an Uber ride to a very friendly and outspoken worker. Here's what she had to say.

Theft is down year over year from $1.2mil to $700k. She attributes this to new armed guards and the locking up of high theft items. Underwear and socks are getting locked up next. She blames the local homeless population for the majority of the thefts.

Whoever owns it (I didn't bother to look it up) changes 75k a month rent. Not a bad side hustle if you ask me. No wonder they don't want to sell the property which she claims Walmart would like to own outright.

The store is supposedly getting a long overdue upgrade, which if true should quash the rumors that pops up every once in a while that they're relocating.

@PeoriaIllinoisan :
Wife and I were at Walmart in East Peoria the other day. They had signs out, and big empty areas as well. So they're undergoing a remodel/renovation as well.

@PeoriaIllinoisan: I'm surprised Walmart doesn't say to the owner of the building that they can take far less rent, sell the building to them, or they're going to walk. That building is big, old and what most people don't want anymore unless you're turning them into storage units like they've done with old Kmarts. I don't know who would rent that big of place. Walmart, on the other hand, has the financial resources that they could probably buy out any place they wanted and build a store there.

@kraziebill :
Just quoting the original post: "Whoever owns it (I didn't bother to look it up) changes 75k a month rent. Not a bad side hustle if you ask me. No wonder they don't want to sell the property which she claims Walmart would like to own outright."
So, Walmart owns the building but not the land it sits on?

Does anyone remember when Walmart on Allen road opened?

I heard they're getting rid of the self checkouts due to theft. Has that happened at the University location?

@MadScientist : I think it was around '02. They missed their target opening because of poor soil conditions. They cut a huge amount off that site.
