"...the city of Peoria is on the hook for at least $1 million — and possibly far more — to a private group of investors who provided seed money..."

If MY seed money ends up paying back the ORIGINAL seed money, whose seed money will pay off the seed money owed to me???

What a mess. With CAT cutting back, Peoria is going to hemorrhage tax revenue. Best cut their losses and forget about a buyout. The opportunity for that is permanently past.

Query: Is the water company tied/linked at all to the needed repairs in the oldest parts of the city's sewage system??

@S.A.Shepler

I worked in the engineering department at IA back in the 80s when I was laid off from Cat. I've always thought it was a bad idea for the city to buy it.

Can you elaborate? You don't have to. Just curious.

Too many opportunities for the "Good Old Boys". I saw it happen in the town I lived in.

From a future Global Warming perspective, potable water is going to be the new oil and far more precious. Privatization of such a life essential commodity has me greatly concerned: i.e. Nestlé Waters North America. [1,2,3]

Then you have the permanent contamination of ground water due to fracking fluid for oil and natural gas, of which a significant amount is exported! Water by the private-sector will have the same market-drive emphasis of profit over local need.

That said, I never had enough information on the buyout to determine which way held the citizens best interests. The aging distribution infrastructure always had me very concerned.

Yea, I saw similar things when Pekin would attempt a water buyout as well.

Can see the city using water company for collateral for some half baked plan and then it bust and water get sold to highest bidder. Detroit anyone CoP can't even keep roads fixed think they can make sure water is safe to drink.

Yep, sometimes the public sector can be even worse. Let's foreclose on homes for people not paying for hazardous water. Brilliant.

@S.A.Shepler a smart politician WOW!!! How can they be made to pay for product they can't use. Take glass of water to court and get judge to drink it or water company lawyer then pay bill.

Congressman Dan Kildee issued a statement Wednesday after reports that some Flint residents recently received notices of potential tax liens being placed on their properties for unpaid water bills during the water crisis:
“Flint families should not have to pay for water that they still cannot drink, and they certainly should not lose their homes over this ongoing water crisis that was caused by the callous decisions of state government. It is unfortunate that Governor Snyder ended water credits for Flint families. I opposed this decision because Flint families deserve support from the state until there is confidence in the water system again.”
