Candy bar, mints, comb, pen, and so on.

I remember $1.00 would fill a bag of groceries.

@tntrecycling :

Wow, those were the days, huh? That kind of purchasing power was well before my time.

@billybob: I grew up down the street from a fire station that had a soda machine in it. We could go in anytime the overhead door was open. One day I accidentally hit the diet button (which was marked "out of order") and out popped a root beer minus the "root".

I remember there was a corner store near my friend's house and candy was 25 cents, with a penny for tax. I must have been 10 or so.

I do enjoy the occasional candy bar but once I realized they were $1.25, they just weren't enjoyable to me anymore.

A dollar doesn't buy a whole lot these days. Ican't even imagine the whole bag of groceries TnT mentioned. And that was a big paper bag back then.

I can't even envision a $10 bag of groceries.

a pack of cigs. As a matter of fact, I think they were about $1 a pack when I quit. Don't miss them one bit.

@AV8R :

They were $1.25 when I first tried them! Of course, I also made $4.25 minimum wage at my after school job so that seemed like a lot. We had a drugstore with a penny candy section, you could fill a little brown paper bag with 100 pieces of candy for a dollar.

Blondies bar on Main has $1 domestic drafts on Fridays from 4-6pm! Wendy's small Frosty, McChicken sandwich, a song download from iTunes or Amazon, TWO greeting cards from the Dollar Store (almost anything in the Dollar Store), a new app on your phone, old DVD rentals from Family Video, a lottery ticket, one hour of parking in downtown Peoria, a book at Goodwill, two pounds of bananas or four cucumbers from Aldi, AND one month digital subscription to the Peoria Journal Star so you don't need the articles copied and pasted here.

When I was in Little League, we had practice behind Wernsman's Restaurant in Germantown Hills. After practice, I would go in and get lunch for 50 cents. A burger was .25, fries were .15 and soda .10.

At age 12 I started smoking then cigs were $.35 a pack. A few years before the cigs for my dad he would hand me a dollar. In the gas station I would go tell the clerk They would look out the window at my dad and then for $1.00 5 packs of Camel no filters. If I remember correctly $.19 a pack 1 penny tax. I remember the market down town East Peoria Schierers market. Don't know how it was spelled. Mom would fill a papers sack fruits and veggies for a $1.00.

Now days the work you have to do to get a bag of fresh produce.

It buys me 2 paperback books at the local Goodwill store. Or even more paperbacks at a yard sale, depending on if the person knows how to properly price stuff at a yard sale. (Or they let me talk them down because they don't want the stuff in their house anymore.)

Hancock Fabrics has their McCall's and Butterick patterns on sale at certain times of the year for 88 and 99 cents. I love to sew my own clothes, so that's a super deal!!!

@EyeintheSky : I've gone out to garage sales with as little as 4 dollars to spend, and come home with a bunch of stuff we've used for the house! If you go at just the right time, people are practically willing to give you what you want.

A spray bottle of Awesome Cleaner at Dollar Tree. Also from there, Handles kitchen trash bags. There are several dollar items I get from there, including laundry detergent for the Food Pantry.

Chocolate chip cookies MUCH bigger than Trumps small hands - from the Bradley student center snack shop - dime a piece or 3 for a quarter. A quarter pound of chocolate malt ball about the same. Now I get oatmeal and bananas. Ugh.
