I have a feeling that soon houses in Dunlap will start selling for pennies on the dollar. Peoria's field of dreams is more of the " If you build it, they will get laid off" variety.

Caterpillar also plans to convert a mining rail facility in Winston-Salem, N.C., to a manufacturing center for Progress Rail, a wholly owned subsidiary. Some mining truck parts now made there will be made in Decatur beginning later this year. Employees at the Decatur plant also have been recently laid off.

No, Winston-Salem is not a "mining rail facility," it is a lower powertrain facility, i. e. axles for off-highway mining trucks made at Decatur, possibly at Acuna, Mexico, and in China and Russia. Plants uses trucks and no railroad is nearby.

And unfortunately tomorrow the stock price of CAT will probably go up as the hedge fund managers will consider the layoffs a co. savings.

Some good news: axle production moved to that new, dedicated plant at Winston-Salem in 2011 will move back to Decatur.

I think they need a new CEO to take the company in a different direction.

@bgbird68 :

I've heard between 4,000 and 5,000 phased out over the next 4 years. Many will be transferred out, some will retire, the rest....who knows. All rumors at this point, and worth exactly the price we paid for them.

@skutfarcus

If board members are dropping like flies a new CEO is on the horizon. It seems t be clear that the
hedge fund mangers are making their presence and intentions quite clear. Up and down Wall St. there is a solid history of a new CEO arriving after board members drop like flies and the presence of hedge fund managers makes it all the more likely. Especially since the hedge fund managers have not had a dividend raise this year.
