Two people shot after argument at birthday party in Peoria
PEORIA — Two people attending a birthday party early Saturday suffered gunshot wounds when an argument turned physical.

The people wounded were not identified in a Peoria police report but arrived at UnityPoint Health-Methodist between 1:15 and 1:30 a.m. Saturday. A condition report could not be obtained without the names of the victims, but authorities said their injuries were not life-threatening.

About 1:15 a.m., police responded to a duplex in the 6900 block of North University Street, just north of Teton Drive, after multiple calls of multiple shots fired.

From reports, the scene seemed chaotic when officers arrived. A man ran from officers as they arrived. He was holding his waistband as if he were armed, a report noted. He was detained. Another few subjects arriving at the same time as an officer were told to leave after becoming verbally aggressive with him, according to reports.

As officers detained some people in front of the duplex, the tenant walked outside. Officers took her back inside to question her and saw a man run to the back of the house. He came back up front and also was detained.

The officer saw two bullet holes in the front door, and several casings were found just outside the door. Police started searching the duplex for safety and were told by dispatchers two people who had been shot had just shown up at Methodist.

The tenant said she was throwing a birthday party for a woman she knew only by her first name. At the party, two men she did not know started arguing. One began shooting inside the duplex, went outside and continued shooting, she said. She told officers she was unaware that someone had been shot.

In addition to the damage to the front door, bullets had gone into the sofa, and there was a bullet hole in a wall. Also, there was a trail of blood from the bathroom to the door and outside. A car also had been hit by gunfire.

Officers found a handgun in another car, parked in front of the duplex, and the keys to the car on the sidewalk.

The address alone shows that the crime is moving north into neighborhoods that were considered safe.
