Hometown Buffet

I just had a text from a friend who is out and about running errands around Big Hollow Rd. The message is that Hometown Buffet is either going to close today or has already closed. I dont have any more information. In any event more empty retails space certainly does not help things.

I'm surprised. That place was always hopping. I used to go to Barnes & Noble all the time and would exit by the stop sign next to it.

Yes even though it was disgusting, having a huge empty space and more lost jobs is a bummer.

Underperforming?? Sounds more like a slowly dissolving corporation.

The company had 328 locations before the closures, meaning it has shrunk by two-thirds since the 2006 Ryan’s acquisition.

After I swore off Golden Corral, I would sometimes go to Hometown if I had a coupon. There were many empty tables every time. I think they lost a lot of business to Golden Corral when it first opened and the customers did not come back to Hometown. I hate to see any business close and employees lose their job. The lady that did most of the baking and omelet making at Hometown was a jewel. Hope she finds something quickly!

I did like going there even though the food was a little “plain” but some liked it that way or because of health issues needed like that. And it wasn't hectic or crazy like some places, you could enjoy a quiet night.

We know several people that work there. Many elderly would go there to eat because they didn't have spicy foods. Shame they couldn't pull out of the slump they were in. @JeepPilot Hospitals still are cheap just you cant fill your plate as often as you like. They`re closer to.

HomeTown Buffet, and dozens of other restaurants, abruptly close without warning.
HomeTown Buffet, and dozens of other restaurants, abruptly closed Thursday. The popular buffet restaurant was located across the United States including Northern California.

In a statement from Food Management Partners (FMP), the restaurant's parent company, 74 under-performing Old Country Buffet, HomeTown Buffet, Ryan's, Fire Mountain and Country Buffet restaurants throughout the United States were permanently closed Thursday.

FMP said that, based on ongoing assessments of individual restaurants, it was "necessary to shutter locations for the continued viability of the brands and the company's employees."

Employees affected by these closures will be given the opportunity to apply for positions at operating stores and there were plans to add staff to the operating restaurants, according to FMP.

As much as I hate chain restaurants, I am more and more convinced of that fact that these massive square foot restaurants are a dying breed. While Texas Roadhouse is booming, every time I go past Applebees and Logans in East Peoria I cringe at how few cars are in the parking lot vs. the size of the buildings. How many restaurants have been in the location where Pizza Ranch is now? Cheddar's old building? Riverstation?

What we need is an end to the "all you can stuff down your throat" restaurant mentality. We are not pigs eating at a trough. Hopefully buffets are a dying breed. The obesity problem that this country faces is astronomical.

@JeepPilot :

I know some people who go out of their way to eat at the cafeteria at OSF. They deal with parking etc. They love the food and say the view from the cafeteria is really nice.I have never been there but others do really like it.
