Shopping local - I went downtown to the new retail stores housed @ Marriott as part of developers agreement. Not only were there no stores occupying any of retail spaces, the corner spot on Main didn't even have a finished floor. Taxes going up, developers got paid, and our "leaders" will probably receive some nice holiday "gifts". It's been how long and not even one store - but that shouldn't be a surprise.

It seems like the gift shop at the museum has gotten somewhat better.

@EyeintheSky

They collect sales tax on store purchases. I have a friend who sells quite a bit of her jewelry there so it also supporting a small business.

@leslie110 Weren't there going to be a set of shops along the river side of it though. Not just a gift shop inside only open during museum hours.

@leslie110

My observation was that there is more of a selection by locals vs the things that were manufactured elsewhere and shipped to the museum.

Now if they could fix the concession stand issues.

I would rather shop local than the big box store. The thing is though the locals are so high priced that the big box store is putting them out of business. Most of the time you can find what you need at the big stores if you ask where it is or if they have that, walk for blocks finding what you want. With a little store walk in usually some one there to help and greet you and maybe they will assist you with what you need.

@tntrecycling That's the catch 22 they don't make enough business to cover cost so they have to have higher prices to make up for it. Then the cycle repeats and soon no customers. I go in and see same Chinese stuff I can get for a fraction of the price so I see how much the mark up they are doing. some of the stuff is upwards of 500% mark up. I just laugh and keep right on going.
