What is the deal with all the wasps? I don't remember there being so many when I was a kid.

Probably just another sign of the end times...... The reason you/we are seeing more wasps at the moment is more than likely the cicadas. Cicadas are like gourmet food for some wasps.

I would hate to see the wasp that would be able to eat a cicada.

@leslie110 :

Oh they are quite real and common in the area:

They make nests in the ground:

Thankfully they are not aggressive towards people. They can still bite tho if you **** one off real bad.

Wasps lay their eggs inside the cicadas, the offspring eat the cicadas, sorry I didn't make that clear. lol

Those cicada killers are HUGE! We're constantly battling paper wasps.

Sorry, that's why I didn't go into the gory details. I left out the paralyzing and taking the cicadas to the wasp's lair (nest) part too. Emoticon

I had my 1st encounter with a Cicada killer wasp on Sunday while playing catch ... It was the largest wasp I ever saw, carrying a cicada and landed 3' infront of me while making the loudest wasp flying noise I ever heard :O

Nope. Nope. Nope!

But, yes, it's like wasps act annoyed that a home (built in the 1960's) is still in their flying path

Perhaps this is why Ramble isn't hearing cicadas! (seriously, though those cicada killers with a cicada in tow look like hummingbirds!)

We had yellow jacket nest in a stump and the surrounding ground in our back yard last fall. After a couple near misses with a swarm attack, we had a guy come and treat the area.

I've noticed more wasps than usual this summer, too. Not seen one of the cicada killers, though....thankfully!

Okay, maybe this wasn't the smartest, but it did the trick. Had a nest of ground bees in an old stump flush with the ground. Discovered it while mowing. (We have a pretty large back yard.) Snuck up on it just after dark and jammed an open bottle of bleach down in the nest hole and ran for my life. Did the trick. Surrounding grass came up light green the next spring. Hey, no more bees!

The next day, all I saw was that upside down white bleach jug sticking up from the ground from afar. Kept monitoring it all day. Didn't dare go near it, too chicken. Waited until late afternoon to go grab the empty jug and run. Nothing. Nothing since!! HA!!
