Were these the guys in the blue shirts? I pulled out of my drive just as they were leaving the house across the street. Leaving flyer in door if no one answers.

@RambleOn :

In the case of the Heights and Washington it was the flyer that led to his arrest. The information on it totally matched up. However, he was always dressed in a tuxedo with a top hat. That guy got close to 700 years. Warrants were everywhere for him.

I did not see the people, I just saw a van parked on the side of the road with "hail damage repairs" written in big letters on the side.

Is there any evidence that these roofing repair people are actually scammers?

I find it odd that you would be able to determine someone is scamming you if you didn't do any business with them and only had a single conversation via cameras.

I don't understand how that would make it a scam.

A roofing company is soliciting your business due to hail damage. They know insurance companies will be paying the tab. That's why they are in your neighborhood. The insurance company isn't doing the work themselves.

Many roofing companies install/repair both metal and shingle roofs.

How is that a scam again?

How would they know your roof has ZERO damage? Most metal roofs suffer damage in hail storms.

These are likely canvassers making $10/hour. It's their job to knock on EVERY door. They aren't climbing on ladders to look at your roof. That responsibility gets handed off to their estimators and sales reps.

It doesn't make it a scam just because they knocked on your door.

I would hope that the company is legit enough to send out people who can look at a roof and determine if there is hail damage, and if not, don't disturb the resident.

If an Illinois resident does not want to be scammed by any type of contractor, the first place to check out is the website of the Illinois Attorney General.

It tells you exactly what to do in order to determine if the person trying to do business with you is legit or not. (I know, don't laugh!! But it's true!!)

Before I ever hired a contractor, I checked to see with the Illinois Attorney General's office how many court cases that company had against it in the past, and also pending. It's a free service that office does. Especially with roofers and window companies.

Don't know about this one but trust me, you can tell a scammer in many cases but not all cases. In the one I mentioned above we were on the driveway leaving a friends house in the Heights when the guy appeared. It was creepy beyond words. Just his demeanor and talk should have cautioned anyone. In this case he seemed to only want to talk to elderly which opens the door, and it did, to other things too on his rap sheet.
